Identifing

AT first day I have the students tell me what their weakness is . We can all say what we are great at but everyone has trouble saying their weakness. This way, you can identify everything all at once.

I like to listen to what is being said with out interupting and decide if I need to get involved allowing students to talk gives insite to the class and to areas that need your attention from attendande gand grades to other problems that might exist

I agree completly with you

I find that getting them to talk about themselves is a good way to start the discussions and tear down fences.

I've found that youhave to gain the students trust before they will open up to you. From day one if you show them that your there for them, and not give the impression of "big me little you", then they show more respect and will open up more towards you.

Guess who won't give you a straight answer the next time?

The students usally have a choice with some of the extra credit work they have to do. I'll ask them would they rather repair dents or R&I something. when they answer one or the other I ask them why they picked what they picked. Usally they say it was because they are not as good with doing the other. Guess what I end up giving them? This way they let me know what they need to work on.

Keep up the good work, Ron.

I agree. Students talk freely among each other and they let other students know which instructors truly care and will be there for them. Sometimes I hear I am too friendly with students. Just because I may be seen sitting outside only means I am there to listen and help with their needs.

Letting the students know that you are interested in them and will always be there if needed may break down some barriers right away.

As we know, students are reluctant to share some private information, but if they would open up to us, on the first day this could be a great tool to use.
