Making improvements towrads retention
I beleive that tthe first step is to ask ourselfs; Are we really doing what is needed to help the students? be honest with yourself and identify where you can improve.
second:Put your game plan together so that you can monitor your results.Ask your students to be honest with you and see from there prospective if you did everything you could possibly do to help them succeed and want to stay in school?
Third:review your reults and once again identify where you can improve and take the neccessary steps to continue progressing.
How do you select the students you poll? How do you know they are giving you an honest answer?
I sometimes will pull a student aside and ask him from his opinion; is there anything I can improve. And they will give a true honest answer.
These are very good comments. I do this same thing at the end of every course.
Chuck, I have to agree with the way the Student in Jeopardy works as a whole. It does bring about a format for those students who continue to struggle. When you pull a student aside and just talk with them about their test scores and offer up help, it shows them that YOU DO care and are not just there to just "Throw the material out". I have had several students take advantage of the extra help and have gone on to succeed toward their final goal. It really is a good feeling when they do "GET IT".
Great comments! Other things we as managers use would be the "Student In Jeopardy" program. This is a great tool that allows those of us that are not in the classroom each day to see what is going on with certain students at a glance then send an email to that instructor or pull the student ourselves if warranted.
