1. Meet with students when they first begin
2. Get weekly reports from instructors and meet with students accordingly
3. Follow up

encourage, discuss any concerns, provide feedback. Ensure everyone know that they are part of a team

I want to make a point of relaying good news about the automotive industry's manufacturers and new job opportunities. That will give students hope of a successful future when they have completed school.

Meet with both the student services and financial aide department staff to identify the reasons our students drop out. Hopefully, if I can understand the student's challenges better, I may be able to help them circumvent issues before they become critical.

Watch for signs of stress in my students and be proactive about helping them cope with whatever is the cause. It's also important to know who to send the students to for assistance, so having a list of viable contacts is very important.

1. Send a general email to all students congratulating them on the good job they've been doing so far based on 1st quarter grades.

2. Meet with all department heads for any imput related to retention.

3. Look into and/or recommend all instructors receive or/have some training in retention.

Invite students and hold 1:1 meetings with them to discuss individual needs or concerns.

Visit classrooms on the first day to shake hands and answers any questions about the program.

Call and check on those that have missed class to let them know they were missed and assure they know we want them back tomorrow.

What are the mechanics of the suggestion box? where is it located? Who checks it and how often? What are your expectations from the program?

What was the process that led to the motto? Who was involved? Do you use this phrase on all internal documents/emails?

Are the students aware of the creed?

What is the role of faculty viz. retention? Is this a change?

I am starting with the suggestion box today, we don't currently have one. Next, the mentoring program--I already spoke about it to Student Council today and several of them are interested in becoming mentors. Third, I will look at the samples listed of assessment tools and see which ones I want to use when having advising meetings.

The first step is to create one common goal or motto. We have developed the following: Believe it. Do it. Live it. We have begun distributing this to all staff and faculty to remind ourselves that we are the best and that we strive to be the best for the students.
The second step is to educate all faculty on their role in retention and what happens to the student, school, and instructor when a student does not acheive their goal.
The third step is to keep the faculty involved. They should be communicating more with students as well as helping Program Directors know what students are in jeopardy. A retention committee will be created and include instructors to get fresh ideas on retention. we are going to get riled up about retention.

1) I am going to review the retention areas from this past quarter and meet with any faculty that have missed their goals.
2) Review my retention by program and look for any areas of concern.
3) I am going to figure out who is just as committed to our retention cause as I am.

Good ideas and we can also have regular student meetings to check on there progress and how are they coping with school and other issues to progress. It is like food before any play.

1. Hold a department staff meeting to discuss student issues, concerns, needs and new opportunities for student satisfaction.

2. Create surveys to pinpoint student needs and concerns.

3. Have a follow-up meeting with staff on progress.

Carmen Bernard

Bruce, please tell us more about the student profile. Is something the student does? When? What's included? How is it used?

The first step for me is to use a more well developed student profile list in order to more fully understand the needs and aspirations of each student.

Secondly, I will make sure that the Orientation process that i will participate in, gives the student more information and a better realistic look at what can be expected.

Thirdly, i will let my supervisors know if any problems arise with what the Admissipons Reps are saying about the school; such as the wrong or inflated information that could be indicated to any potential studnet.

1. Wll meet with all new students on one to one basics for the first module in order to help in there work.

2.All students in my class who's grades are not so good i will provide more coaching to do better.

3. Have regular meeting with class and discuss other issues apart from academic activities.

4.Using our life experiences to help students solve problems that they are having.

1. Discuss peer mentoring program with Director of Education.

2. Attend committee meeting to improve student orientation.

3. Instructor training session on "customer service".

With committed faculty, we can achieve an atmosphere of support. This will help out students know they are welcome in our institution and that we are committed to changing their lives.

This process of taking this course has re-enforced my belief of having an open door policy and establishing a reason for students to come in and visit with me as they progress through the admissions to the actual attendance of school . I will make a resolve to be more available at orientation, check on them through the beginning and end of each module and take the time to actually listen and ask probing questions when I do see stuck to actively avoid a student feeling isolated.

First I have learned timing is everything, so my #1 would be to be sure my timing is right on target. Contacting students asap when they miss class. #2 would be to encourage my students (we become what we think) to think big..BIG!! #3 would be to pay closer attention to identifying students with stressors at home or outside the school environment.

Are these new activities, Charles? How have you approached struggling students before?

Step 1: Working to identify those students who are at risk academically by analyzing weekly quiz scores.

Step 2: Working with those student by offering (or mandating) tutoring services

Step 3: Following up with those students to track their progress
