Keeping them in the classroom
I truly believe that working your hardest during those first 5 days is the most important to the survival of the student's discussion to stay in school and that their choice really IS the right choice!
This very thru you first five days of class are very critical the way you talk to them you rpersonal experience good and bad
Michael--
Very true! I have personally experienced first days where some faculty purposefully tried to chase students away. Not a good feeling from the student side.
Susan
There is no doubt that the first days of being in school are critical for survival. If a student feels like they are overwhelmed immediately they may never come back.
Bradley--
That is an excellent point. If we treat people with respect and as adults, they will rise to the occasion.
Susan
I also beleive that the first couple of days are the most important of the class, but I also beleive that the first day is the day to show your students who you really are and also show them that you are there to teach them everything that you can that will help them on there journey through school, also this is the day to let them know how your going to treat them. I always let them know that RESPECT is the key thing in the classroom, the students are adults not high school students anymore. By showing them respect the first day and everyday after that my classroom is always full, my retension numbers say up, and thats a good thing.
Duvall--
Your situation certainly sounds like it is, in fact, very important to clearly articulate--early--all the requirements. Sounds like you have a great plan.
Susan
Patricia--
Absolutely! Those first few days are absolutely critical. Good for you!
Susan
I work in a lab/classroom situation and it is very important that the information needed to acheive all the tasks be presice and clear on day one. This is when we discuss the objectives and tasks that will follow in the lab.
