What are some things that you intentionally do to position yourself to be a mentor to your students?
I can think of two individuals specifically that have been mentors in my life, both have been previous managers of mine. The first mentor helped me understand what it is he expected of me and how to handle situations so that both parties feel good about the outcome. The other mentor has helped me to think through things and prioritize issues based on immediate importance and evaluating the long-term impacts of those decisions. The first mentor helped me to become a better teacher and the second mentor has helped me become a better manager.

What were some of the specific things that this mentor did that left such a lasting impression?
I am an eductor today because of my mentor in cosmetology school. I feel as if a mentor will leave an everlasting impact on your life, even lifechanging.

What are some specific things you do in your classes to position yourself to be a possible mentor for your students?
The mentor that I have is a professor that I had while I was working on my undergraduate degree. She was there to help with anything that she could. She was there to explain what the career field was all about and she showed that the field was a great one.
My mentor was one that encouraged me not to give up when situation became very challenging. The encouragement from my mentor helped me to accomplish my goal of becoming an effective teacher.
I had a great mentor in the corporate management world who helped me learn how to business write and achieve great goals. He could have ignored me but he helped me to achieve being a much better executive. Thank you Bob Loewen!
Those values would include things like:telling the truth, being dependable and doing the right things even when others aren't watching.

I look up to people with good moral values.

What kind of people do you look up to? What are some traits you exhibit that can position you to be the one the students look uo to?
I think that everyone needs 1 or 2 people to look up to. These people whether they know it or not are mentoring each and every day.

What are some specific things your drama teacher did that were so impacting?
I have had two very important mentors in my life - my first was my undergraduate English professor - she is the one who really showed me how literature was art and how we all have a need to express ourselves. She did indeed give me the confidence to succeed. One of my proudest moments was after graduation, she said to me that I could now call her by her first name - that she was no longer my professor, but my friend.
My other was the owner of a family owned toy store I worked at while attending graduate school. He taught me a lot about hard work and intergrity, but more importantly, he really showed me he cared about me and my education. He would regularly ask me how my grades were, what I got on my last exam, etc. And as I worked there, I saw him (and his wife) show the same care to each and every customer. They got to know each family that came in the door, and so did I. To be honest, it was one of the best jobs I ever had I still think about those days as some of the best in my life.
The effect that my mentor has had on my role as a career educator is significant. I remember the kindness and encouragement my mentor portrayed even when students were trying on the nerves. I try to model the same kind of positive reinforcement and encouragement with my students that my mentor used to help me become aware of my abilities.
I had a wonderful mentor in high scool - my drama coach. She was the first adult that I felt did not judge me by my older siblings actions. Because of her, I started to believe in myself.

I have had several mentors thru out my life. They have taught me many things professionally and personally. I try to pass those important things on to my students.
