Student Retention
Create a Applicant Qualification Checklists and Self Checks is really important in the Orientation process for a student's retention?
Janet,
How is this communicated to the student before they start and throughout their program?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
The prospective student needs to be educated up front on what they are signing up for. They will need to make an commitment to attending school on a regular basis.
I agree and I believe that if we tell the students the school's expectation from them as a student that it would make a little bit of understanding about retention.
Corey,
Checklists and guidelines are simple to create and are good alternatives to notes. Students can miss information if they are too focused on taking notes.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Students in todays time wish to be aware of all of their responsibilities. Having checklists that clearly lay out expectations is a great way to calm the students down and make them feel more comfortable. Unfortunately students do not take good enough notes on their own. If I have them collect lists that state what is expected from them it does certainly help when they ask questions. If they say the "didn't know" I can say it was on your checklist and it was expected from you.
when a person is attending a school for a particular subject ,that already is the dedication ,now it is a delicate proses in information feed and identifying how the student is identifying the information.

Advising students of what we have all seen as challenges is the right thing to to.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
I think one of the most valuable things these self checks could do is to get the prospective student thinking ahead as to how they are going to combat any potential obstacles to their success. Helping them to self-assess how committed they are, how much time they are willing to give, how they will handle the financial strains, how they will arrange for childcare, and what their social support networks can provide can help them recognize the serious step that they are taking by enrolling in higher education. This could hopefully be done in a way that does not scare them away but just gets them focused on the difficult but rewarding road ahead of them.
Doris,
Yes, feedback is for everyone.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
I do think creating a self check list is a great idea, being able to have constructive criticism is great for growth not only for the student, but for staff also. That way the staff will be able to correct mistakes and keep more students.
I agree 100% it all starts with admissions.Unfortunately sometimes they are too interested in numbers to do a thorough evaluation! Then there are problems once they are enrolled and retention problems result. It can be very frustrating from the instructor point of view!
Teri,
As long as everyone working with the students agrees with what is in the checklist.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Students always want to be helped to understand what will be expected of them during their time at school. Check lists would be very important
This makes a lot os since. It's kind of a guide for helping the student when situations arise and students are contemplating putting a hault on their decisions to move forward in their career choice.
Cheryl ,
How would you setup a program like this?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
What would really help is having the admissions people see the students they sign up at work in class. The students will feel they are connected with the rep. and the rep. will see the that the student was a good choice for that program.
Gina,
I am sure the checklist will focus on why the program is a good choice, describe what the students needs to prepare for and how they can be successful.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
I plan on working together with my Admissions Dept to devise a check list for potential students interested in my specific program. I think getting more involved with what/how they present my program will have a positive impact on retention. I would also suggest for the students"on the fence" about my program to speak with me to review specific concerns that maybe admissions can not give a clear answer to.
Michael,
Having regular meetings between the PD and Admissions helps build the internal connection which in turn helps the students.
