ORIENTATION &MENTORING

THIS SET THE MOOD FOR A STUDENT TO TO FEEL SECURE AND COMFORTABLE TO WANT TO CONTINUE ON.

Meeting instructors and future classmates is extremely beneficial for new students at orientation because they get a chance to get to know one another before the first day of classes.

Arthur,

Thank for your post and for delineating the difference between Orientation and Mentoring. Yes, Orientation is not a single day event but an ongoing process in the early goings for the student at the institution.

Both important for all parties. For the student, ORIENTATION afirms what to expect about going back to school. The books, classrooms, time management, strange surrounding all contrbute to the fears of going back to school. An effective ORIENTATION program is on-going until graduation.

MENTORING is the "I Got Your Back and/or "You Can Talk To Me About Almost Anything". School is a change, even those that know what they are doing. Class schedules, time, classroom distances, study after hours, homework and family issues can all take there tolls. A MENTORSHIP program allows an escape a timeout to talk to someone who can listen and advise.

Alicia ,

Strengthening the connection to the school with the student over the first several weeks does increase their chance of completing the program.

Hello,

I believe that orientation does set the mood and standards for student expectations. Beyond orientation, we have representative for various departments that go into the classroom within the first six weeks to present additional information and ask how the students are doing. It also serves as a reminder of the resources available.

sadie,

Yes. What follow up is provided beyond the initial orientation?
