Excellent. The idea is to connect with others to learn and to keep their vision alive.

Our placement department encourages students to volunteer for many events throughout their education time here. They are given credit and recognized for their community services in volunteering. They are sent on “Stages” which lets them see what a job location would be like by working alongside of professionals in their field. We also have a restaurant that they must work in as part of their training.

Placement departments should not be at the end only. They should be envolved from day one to motivate students to continue and finish their education. They can motivate students by putting up a NEW HIRE board, or a NEW EMPLOYER board, however, it must be placed in a HIGH traffic area so students see it every day. It is ALSO a great admissions tool for prospective students.

Our placement department spends a lot of their time on seminars on how to get hired. I think that our placement department could serve our student population better if they work with students instead of worrying about the numbers.

Our Placement Department conducts our orientation, describes what employers are looking for, brings in guest speakers for classes, teaches a class in the student's last quarter to prepare them for the interview, build their portfolio and then had mock interviews, with outside employers.

To improve retention they could post more jobs, go speak in many different classes, and walk around and talk to the students more.

You have the right idea. Career services can help a bunch.

Dr. B

Our placement department assists the students right from the time of orientation. They keep in close touch with local employers and monitor job openings that would suit students especially just before they are about to graduate. They e-mail job postings to students and offer help and guidance for the students, helping them compose resumes and practise their interviewing skills.
One place I feel that they could improve is when the students do their internships. The placement department could do more to help them, they seem to leave the responsibility more on the shoulders of the students, which students have mentioned that they feel they need more help and support with.

Good deal. The key is to make sure that they are forming relationships... students appreciate a person, rather than just a list.

Dr. B

In our school, both paid and volunteer listing are posted conspiculously and most instructors are actively involved in placement and work based opportunities. I think in this aspect the school I teach at is maximising the potential that it does have.

We continually track student attendance to make sure they are keeping up with what is going on in School. In addition, our placement program is a key ingredient in our marketing effort. If we cannot document job placement for our students then we are failing them in their effort to obtain gainful employment in their career field.

Our placement department starts the process with orientation and has what they call "face time" with every course they take untill the end.

Excellent. What would happen if you all discussed career plans several times and early in the educational program? Linking careers to advising is powerful.

Dr. B

About a month before a student graduates from here they meet with a future employment adviser... they discuss where the student would like to work and what kind of work they want to do. After a student graduates there are placement resorces in place to find work as needed.

Sounds like your placement department is linked. The idea is to continually show how their education will translate to the workplace.

Dr. B

Our placement department goes above and beyond the call of duty to place as many students as possible. They are intentional in pursuing the students and helping them to develop their resumes, to adopt best practices for interviewing, to keep students abreast of current trends and events and to get the best opporunities in the industry. We have a great placement team!

We have a 3 months externship at the end of the cycle.
Placement department are finding positions for the students where they can do the 3 months at the same time giving them experience and ultimately staying indefinitely in the company they are in.

The placement Dept seeks contacts in the industry and involves some industry key players to be part of the placement process.

We formally assist students with their resumes within a class taken. All instructors are involved with speaking to students about their future plans, helping them to think about externships and where they plan to work. We invite employers in for Career Days and place them through the hallways so that students may interact with them; some of them get hired on the spot. We print weekly joblists that are availble to all students. Our Career Services Department is strong.

Perfect. Real world causes fascination and keeps the student's goal alive. I agree, career services should be involved early in the educational process. Why? Students come to school to get the job.

Dr. B

Students in many classes are taught by instructors use real world scenarios and posing real world situations for student to navigate through in their daily assignments and production.
The need in my opinion is a more collabrative effort between instructors and career services in order to provide students with a seemless education to employment event.

Excellent. You are doing the right things. Be sure to get involved with students early in the program. They need to know you and you have the chance to make a big difference in retention.
