Having a positive attitude
I think if we expect our student to have a positive attitude then we have to have one as well. Any negativity from the instructor can influence the students attitude. Therefore setting the pace for their whole experience.
This also sets the pace for the institution because often times students begin to wonder why would a learner institution have someone so negative on staff.
David,
What are some specific things you do to help students internalize control?
Jeffrey Schillinger
I agree. As Instructors, we set the tone, pace and attitude of the class. It is up to us to arrive in a positive frame of mind....and then unleash the same power in our students by showing them that they have that control/choice.
Positive attitude is everything in life and even more so important in the classroom. Without a positive attidue the students are not going to respond well and want to be around you
Usually they will reflect what they see, we are like a magic miror to them and we kind of playing the monkey see , monkey do game if I can take this as an example.
I believe that by showing them a good routine they will adapt, open their eyes and become a better person and student, remember education.
Thanks
Lionel
This is so true. No matter what is going on in my life, when I walk into the classroom I am enmeshed in their learning and making it a positive experience. I am never crabby or short with my students. They dont deserve to have a mean and inpatient person educating them. It is my goal to spread a positive attitude on all they do.
Mark,
How do you encourage a positive attitude and confidence?
Jeffrey Schillinger
I encourage a positive attitude and confidence
I agree. Attitude is transferable whether positive or negative. I enjoy teaching and truly love being around stduents. This shows as an Instructor through my teaching. We all have our days but we have a responsibility to teach our students and that is part of being professional. If you are happy to be there and show your students their respect, they will in turn enjoy coming to your class and show the respect that you deserve.
Always smile and have a positive inside the classroom
Philip,
Thanks for being excited about math. I used to teach History and had to show passion to get my HS students through it.
Jeffrey Schillinger
I agree with this ... we are in our roles as teachers/educators because we love what we do, and the subject matters in which we teach. As such, we should be positive in our dealings with everyone in the school environment. If we give off the appearance or a negative attitude, a look that we don't want to be there, we'll get the same response from the students. After all, why should the students feel motivated about what we do if we don't give the appearance of being motivated ourselves?
I actually had a former student write in his/her student evaluation of me "There is something wrong with someone who is that excited about math" - but if I'm not excited about it, why should the students?
I agree with you! As instructors we set the pace and temperature gauge of our classrooms. The students watch to see how we act and react to everything! If we come into the classroom with a big smile and greeting everyone, and acting like we are excited about being in the classroom with them and eager to discuss the subject at hand, our students will pick-up on our emotions! This creates a positive learning environment in the classroom!
Diane,
Thanks for sharing this. The teacher's attitude when she walks into the classroom usually sets the tone for the day. Students feed off the attitudes and actions of the instructor.

I agree. I think it is very important to have a positive attitude. I have found that when I am positive and enthusiastic, the students will be too.
Rickey,
Establishing rapport is a key to effective instruction. The better students feel about the environment, the better they will do.

I am an auto repair instructor.I greet my students when they arrive to class each day. This starts things on an upbeat note. They seen to pay better attention in the classroom and perform well with thier "hands on" tasks in the shop.
This is true but i feel that with enough positive input for someones emotions, enen a less than great envirinment can be overcome. which may lead to a very egar learner.
Steven,
Emotions are a powerful influence on learning. If someone is in a less than pleasant envirinment, the chances of effective learning go way down.
