Students who are failing at midterm.

Any student with a failing grade at midterm is given a form that asks them to define why they believe they are failing, and has them set goals and measurable actions to improve their grades. For many of my students this is the first time they have set actual goals, and those that actually follow their plans do very well turning their grades around.

Yes, it seems optimal to meet as soon as possible with a student who is demonstrating an overall lack of understanding of the material. I imagine this support and encouragement to problem-solve may help him or her in other classes, and in other life areas as well.

I too prefer to meet with the student when i first detect a problem

I do not believe that midterm is too late. It is never too late to make improvement but i believe that better outcome can be achieved if issues are addressed timely to reduce student's and intructor's frustration. I prefer to meet with a student as soon as i identify that the student is having problem comprehending the subject matter versus waiting till midterm to address the issue. When issues are addressed as it happens, students can adapt sooner and have more time to change whatever belief, behavior, attitude or expectations that is not making them do well.

The physical act of setting goals is an important step that many students need to be taught. Writing it down makes it more real, and I encourage students to post their goals.

We do the same thing with academic advising and make extra time to do out of class tutoring and study groups for those in need of a little extra help.

I think this is a great idea! I plan to implement this in my next quarter.

Our system is to do a midterm advising form with a remediation plan--we also make tutoring a required objective to pass the course to ensure success. If absenteeism is a component--it is addressed both individually and to the class as a whole, while not targeting any one individual. One saying that we use is "that there is a direct correlation between attendance and performance academically or grade achieved".

Kimberly,

How can we keep students from giving up?

At this point student have given up.... we must remember the 3ms

Robert,

Is midterm too late? Should these actions be taken earlier?

Jeffrey Schillinger

We have a system here to where we can get help to those students so they can get back on course and hopefully pass the course...
