Team player

Having a good repore with all depts. can only enhance the student experience

Charles,

You are correct. Students can usually figure out that something is not quiet right, even if they don't know exactly what it is.

If the TEAM PLAYER spirit is to work... ALL DEPTS need have not lost the vision as to why we are here in the first place. Too many times greed will interfere with the TEAM. Student can see that and they will either loose faith or play one against the other.

Good point, Amy. What are some things your school does to stress this concept?

This is true in that all department no matter where in the school you work feed off of one another. We sometimes need to understand what it takes to do someone elses job.

I feel a good team player not only plays by the rules and also tries to help others play by those rules. A team player makes the team work. You need to find the common goals for the team and get everyone on board with those goals. Those who have a difference of opinion should be encouraged to state that opinion but also to be open to the opinions of others. There has be to give and take with all team members. It needs to be emphasized that this is a team and keep giving the team members the big picture of what is trying to be accomplished and how are we going to get there. It is important that all members listen.

Thanks, Jane. The best career colleges know that every employee depends on every other employee in some way to help reach individual goals. Everyone is in recruitment. Everyone is in financial aid. Everyone is in academics. Everyone is in career services.

its always good to have a good rapport with the departments in your organization. You never know when you need help from these departments. It is a good habit to have to be a good team player.

By sharing experiences and helping each other among staff, we can make a stronger team and benefit all together.

Thanks, Steven.

Does this formal relationship continue once both the faculty member and the admissions representative continue in service to the school?

At our school, we teamed each admissions rep with a faculty member. This process did have some success as we learned about each other's challenges and duties.

Yes. I beleive it is very easy to slip into a "What's best for me?" mentality. At the end of the day, even though all teams can only ultimately be successful by pulling together - each depatment has metrics that they must meet and when the going gets tough, many times is human nature to shift gears and focus on not sinking. This many times entales looking at your personal team and finding solutions to doing "your part" better, which can lead to the 'me" syndrome.

Filecha,

Having a leadership team that works together for the common goals of the college, while keeping student success first in their minds, is a key to the success of a career college. It is easy for each department to slip into the "What's best for me?" mentality, especially if things are not going well.

One thing I like about the management team I work with is that we all get along. We have very informative management meetings, where we all share things that are going on in our department.

I beleive we all get along because each of us understands what the other person's assignment it and what it takes for them to be successful. With that, we are sensative to one another's needs.

Going beyond teaching- Following up on absent students, being a counselor, parent and a friend.

A school without a team spirit cannot function.
All departments depend on one another and have to work towards the students' success. If one department or team member is negative the students' success is in jeopardy.

Their is no I in team everyone must work together

I agree, I make sure all my student's make it to their appointments, or, they may not be able to continue to attend class.

That is completely accurate. It is important to understand the role each department plays in the overall picture. Each department plays a role in the successful student experience. Everyone is on the same team and should be information sharing to strive for excellence.

It takes more than one department to make the school run effectively. Education can only happen for a student if they can find the money to attend (financial aid). Without job prospects (employment), they may lose their vision. It also helps to have a place for students to turn to during rough times (student services). And don't forget, someone needs to go out and encourage prospective students to make the commitment to better themselves (admissions).
