Class Size

Online Lesson Plans

What do you feel like are the components of a good online lesson?  I am finishing my first year as a CTE teacher (what a wacky first year!).  We have created a committee to plan for future online learning needs.  We currently use Canvas as our CMS platform for everything except grades (we use Aspen for that).  We will be creating guidelines for all of our teachers going forward.  Thanks for your input!

Dropping a student from a Chat

Just wondering if anyone has ever dropped a student and what the reason(s) were for cutting a student from a particular Chat or Topic.  Actually, I was not aware that we could do that as long as the student was registered in our class.

Hi I found an error in the lecture, module 2, page 2 I think

However, as with any learning process, there are disadvantages with asynchronous learning. These include the challenge of students not procrastinating.

I think the challenge is students procrastinating.   Does anyone know how to get this message to the course developers?  ty

VARIETY & DIVERSITY

I feel like online is harder to read a students behaviors to find their learning styles and interests. I t is very important to offer the content in many different ways so that everyone has a chance to master it. There are different cultures, levels of education, age, technology , and more that affect a students ability to easily leard the content.

Linear content and feedback

  • I am having difficulty completely understanding this passage:
  • "If completion of the content is linear, are students locked into a specific time-frame within which to complete a particular component, for example a module? If not, are you required to provide feedback on content from another module which has a different time-frame?"

Does this mean that as the instructor you are under a race to provide feedback from the module(s) prior to the one the student is working on, and/or completing?

Being Present

When I took online courses, the best courses were with instructors who were constantly present. They demonstrated this by giving continual and meaningful feedback to discussions, projects, and reports. They also would create interesting videos doing hands on projects. I felt connected to them and the course material. They also would have the students respond to 2 or 3 other students during a discussion assignment. This way we all felt connected. When the onground portion of the course started, most of us felt like we knew each other because of the discussions. It was a great experience.

This is the way I would set up my courses for students. Keeping them interested, connected and engaged with good and relevant discussion topics.

wiki

I don't think wiki is totally a good source for acurate knowledge. Simply, anyone may post what they choose to post. with out having acurate source.

Student alienation

Has anyone have any problem with students being active or productive online?

I know this is somewhat kind of new to my students, being in CTE and the field of pharmacy really is all about hands on but we do a lot of data entry.

You will thing the students will be fluent to be online with data entry, but I am not finding enough engagement with a few students.

I have tried posting pictures, creating discussion, and other items.

I have reached out to the students as well, and their reasoning is its too much to do along with other courses that they are taking.

Any ideas to make this a fun learning experience and getting the non-alienated students engaged.

Do you find on-line learning as effective as the traditional classroom?
