About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

BRIAN, This is an important message for students to hear. They need to see that they are learning and making progress toward their career goals. When they do their motivation will increase. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Heather, Passion about your field and enthusiasm for teaching it helps to generate student excitement just as you mention. It is for sure that if you are not excited about being in the class the students won't be either. We need to bring our A game to class each time it meets. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Landis, I am a big fan of modeling as well. Your dress and conduct sets the tone for the class and gives your students an idea of what will be expected of them when they enter the field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Landis, Respect is earned while you get students settled into the course and then rapport starts to be developed through the efforts you have shared with us. When rapport is developed teaching becomes a lot of fun because you are teaching as well as working with pre-professionals that are going to be the next generation of workers in your field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Landis, Great strategies. You field is changing so quickly that it would be a challenge to bring in all of challenges that face computer security and use since it seems that every few days a new issue comes up or a system has been hacked. I think it would be a lot of fun to teach in this field because your students have to be excited to learn how to work in the field and meet some of the challenges head on as part of their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Nate, Students like change of pace and variety in their instructional delivery. You are doing both with your approach and as a result I know you are appealing to their learning preferences. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Landis, Pulling upon the life experiences and knowledge of students in relation to the current topics being studied is a great way to enhance engagement. You are letting them move themselves forward in terms of knowledge through their abilities and use of devices that they are comfortable in using. A win win for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Nastassia, Having former students come into course greatly enhances the value of the course to students. They see the connection between the content and their career success. The more of these connections the better because they increase the excitement that students have about what they are studying. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Landis, By following your strategy student frustration and anxiety is reduced. They know the expectations and requirements and they can strive then to meet them. It should never be a mystery as to what the instructor wants in terms of course outcomes. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Nate, Good point because we all can remember how we felt when we entered a new course and as a result structure our class opening to ensure that each student feels comfortable and supported in the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
