About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Landis, Thanks for this list of ways introductions can benefit and inform both students and you the instructor about the dynamics as well as personalities that are present in the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Landis, This is so true in relation to the importance of a well prepared syllabus. The syllabus answers many of the questions that students have as well as gives them a perspective on how the course is going to operate and what the expectations are. By having this information from the beginning students will have their anxiety reduced and be able to focus on the upcoming course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Landis, Great advice for all instructors especially those just starting their teaching careers. They need to read your comments and heed this advice so they won't be left standing in front of a class that runs for 2 hours and they have five minutes of content to share. You gotta have a backup plan, always! Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Doris, Like your style. This way you know that your students have thought through the situation/problem rather than just wanting to unload it on you. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Howard, The service industry is problem solving on a full time basis. You are actually doing a great service for your students through your questioning efforts. I know they don't seem to think so but as we both know in the end this process will be valuable to them. Keep asking those questions! Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Susan, The more of these connections you can make the better. They need to see how the course is moving them closer to their career goals and the life that they want for themselves. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Philip, I do to and as a result I learn so much from my students. This then becomes a win win for everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
SUSAN, Good information and examples of why the human factor has to be an integral element in all the interactions we have with our students. This is what a lot of their success is build on. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
SUSAN, Knowing they have a caring instructor as their learning leader goes a long way in helping students to get settled into a course. Then if they can have success early in the course this builds their self confidence and this gives them even more motivation to become a part of and successfully complete the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Susan, This is a good process to start with your students. They are going to have to do it once they are out in the field so the more we can help them to develop such skill now the better prepared they will be for career success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
