Oscar, Most career colleges do not have many adult students who are there for just a course of two. Do you find dealing with these students to be a challenge? Jeffrey Schillinger
Maria Luisa, Thanks for this post. These are great things to do before every class meeting. All should be special. Jeffrey Schillinger

Carol, Thanks for this post. It sounds like you are positioning yourself to be an effective mentor. Jeffrey Schillinger
Thanks, Chrissy. Theses are effective proactive strategies. Jeffrey Schillinger
You make an interesting point here, Leonard. We should not try to be "counselors" unless we are licensed to do so. We should be ready and willing "advisors" to out students both proactively when we see a need and reactively when students bring concerns to us. Sometimes those concerns require professional services. Good schools have found a way to link students with professional services either within their communities or via a contract with service providers. Jeffrey Schillinger
Leonard, Simple, relationship-building efforts pay off in the long run. Jeffrey Schillinger
Carol, What are the sytematic ways your college deterimenes and addresses common student needs? Jeffrey Schillinger
Carol, This is a good way to greet students every day. We like to stress that the opening activities and closing activities are as important as the "lesson" in student retention and learning. Jeffrey Schillinger
Grace, This sounds like what a career college, or any institution for that matter, should be. Jeffrey Schillinger
Grace, What you describe here is sometimes referenced as position onesself as a "similar other" who has been where they are and knows how to get where they want to be. This is key to building rapport as long as one does not accidently come off as thinking "it's all about me." Jeffrey Schillinger
