About me

I currently serve as the Vice President of Business Solutions for Bridgepoint Education. In my present role, I provide guidance to the company's ground based and online colleges to optimize their operations while staying within regulatory guidelines.

I have over 22 years of experience in the education industry. My experience encompasses virtually all aspects of the education business, including admissions, financial aid, academics, career services, and management of multi-campus operations. I’ve held senior level management positions at Career Education Corporation, MedVance Institute and the University of Phoenix (Apollo Group) as well as providing consulting services to a multitude of colleges and universities during my tenure with Campus Management Corporation.

My focus has been on campus start ups, regulatory compliance, process improvement, and operational oversight of multiple campus colleges, including international campuses. I recognize the challenges of working in a highly regulated environment that has grown more complex as companies have expanded operations, either organically or through acquisition, to include multiple regulatory bodies and governing oversight entities.

I hold a B.S. degree in Business from Arizona State University and an M.A. degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. I have completed the Apollo Group's Executive Development Program and the Career College Association's (now APSCU) Leadership Institute.

Agreed - I have always said that if done right, everyone wins. I think it's possible to be in it for the company AND the student and have all involved parties satisfied with results!

Misrepresentation has been defined by the Department of Education as any false, erroneous or misleading statement made by the institution. What advice would you give a new employee that would help them to avoid inadvertently misrepresenting the institution?

Marvin - I couldn't agree more regarding the need for employee training. It's critical to a school's success to provide appropriate training and guidance to new employees and ongoing given the many changes that occur over time.
Marvin - That's great to hear! Many schools struggle with book distribution and it sounds like you have established a great process!

Great point, Jenny. Finding the right source to get an accurate answer is the right thing to do.
I know it's difficult for smaller schools but, such separation of specific duties is critical. However, there may be considerations of certain duties and functions that can be done without violating the specific areas which require separation.

Excellent point, Jeannette - while a scheduled audit provides the opportunity for review and validation, some audits are unannounced. Proactively maintaining files and records is part of a compliant campus culture.
Laura -I agree that it is important for the school to validate the processes that occur when companies take documents offsite for destruction. A breach of security of such information would be considered the school's responsibility, even if the outsourced company is technically at fault.
Duane - I agree with your concerns. We need to be diligent in our respect for our students' security, even when the entity requesting it is a regulatory authority!
