Joseph, Plans and budgets are always a challenge to follow. Business sense tells us the plan must be right! But we think a plan is like a road map where we may find better routes as we are along the way. We think this points to constant evaluation and updates. How are things going? How can they be better? Is where we are going really the best place to be? Perhaps it gets your entire Team thinking and working together. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Leticia, We totally agree that it's all about the job. This is why career services staff are an essential part of the admissions tour! Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Kathleen, This is great that you start a personal marketing mind set right from the start. You recognize that it takes time for students to build personal confidence as well as employment search skills. We think that probably their 30 second speech must change over time as they learn more about themselves and gain more skills. Great ideas. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Kathleen, Great that marketing and the employment search is part of the curriculum. That helps to keep student's eyes on the end goal - to successfully obtain employment. Students need skills and confidence. It takes time and know-how and a lot of hand holding. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Nikeline, We hear that many schools advertise at the movies. And some invite movie go-ers to tweet to make contact, set appointments, and more. Many ways to be creative to get the word out. The first task is to determine who your market is, where they go, and what they look at. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Nikeline, What's great about what you are doing is that you hold weekly meetings so staff can talk about their experiences and progress. That provides feedback, gives other staff members ideas they can use, and helps build on strategies. That is so good. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Nikeline, Great that you encourage your staff to talk up your school and be a resource to people seeking training or staffing. You might want to give them a small printed card with brief information about the school and programs. Or be sure each employee has their own business card with info about your school. If you are compensating employees for enrollments you might want to check the regulatory agencies that oversee your institution. That might not be permitted. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Morgan, Good points, Morgan. What is very important is that the information you provide admissions staff is accurate, up to date, and verifiable. We feel that career services has to work closely and consistently with admissions staff. We even think they should sit together. Each can learn from the other and ensure that data is true. Applicant students can talk to career services. Most of the time prospective students are focused primarily on getting a job. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Cheryl , Great points, Cheryl. There are many benefits when contacting employers. One is to keep up to date with their staffing needs. Another is to determine if your curriculum meets their needs and what changes are needed. And another is having them see you as THE source for training and staffing. Thanks Dr. Susan Schulz
Cheryl , Great points. Instructors do have to be instructed as to how to integrate career services and a job search state of mind within the classroom. And we agree that it takes time and many processes to get students to build their self confidence. Skills are relatively easy to teach compared to getting students to know and believe in who they are and that they are capable. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
