Cheryl , We agree - career services has to start as early as the admissions process. We also believe that employment skills training needs to be laced within the students total experience - that means in the classroom, job shadowing, assignments, and more. Placement should be on the students' minds all the time. That will certainly impact on the success of getting a job! Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Amy, Speaking in every class is a great way for students to learn what you do and how you can assist with the job search process. An open door policy is good. The problem is that students don't always know which door or what to talk about or ask for. That's why we feel students should be required to meet with career services staff and complete certain activities in order to graduate. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Angie, Yes, Angie, the Career Services and placement departments are involved in just about every aspect of the school. If they are doing their job career services staff are gathering information about the careers your institution trains for. They are providing admissions with accurate statistics re job placement and salary ranges the labor market. If admissions is doing their job, they are bringing prospective students to meet with your staff to learn first hand the kinds of services and training your department offers. Ideally you manage the Alumni Community at your school as well. Alumni can be of great assistance… >>>

Janice, Very true, Janice. The educators do have to know all about career services and everything you offer. Plus they need accurate information about employment opportunities, salary ranges and more. You are right that the teachers have the most contact with students. We think the admissions staff also needs to get daily information from the placement department. Prospective students want to know if and where and how they will get jobs and how other students are doing. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
Marita, Great. Suggest you assign one person as Community Outreach. If you see them at their desk they are not doing their job! This person needs to develop and maintain relationships with employers and potential employers. Find out their needs and how your school can address them. Keep in touch by sending informational info. Get support from your Alumni. Happy grads will introduce you to their employers and tell you about job openings. MaxK offers a course on Alumni by the way. Lots of opportunities by being out in the community. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Marita, The requirement to prepare and give presentations is something that applies to all majors and career preparation programs. Thanks for reminding us. When students are required to talk about their work it provides great presentation and public speaking skills and confidence building opportunities. It is easy to start by talking about oneself. And isn't that what is required during a job interview? So you are giving students a chance to express themselves creatively, improve their craft, and gain interview skills! Seems like you are also improving the listening skills of the rest of the class. Great ideas to apply… >>>

Marita, This is a great reminder that all students, regardless of major, should be building portfolios. For media arts it seems obvious. Building a portfolio involves many benefits in addition to having something to show. It builds confidence about what the student is capable of and how they improve with time. This form of confidence building is vital for anyone seeking a job. We agree, that employment skills training and awareness must start early. In fact, we think it should start during the admissions process. There should be placement staff and alumni available for the new student to chat with.… >>>

anthony, Word of mouth is the best source of publicity. Yes, it takes working at it every day. But the results can be great. There are some career schools that get 90% of their enrollments from referrals. And these new students are quality as well, because they know what they are getting. Referrals means that everyone on your staff is committed to a student focused orientation. That takes a lot of training but does pay off. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Marita, We also agree that a great placement and career services department impacts the entire school. Happy and employed students refer their friends and families. These referrals make for quality enrollments. Effective job search strategies help ensure the mission of the school - to train for employment, and as you pointed out - to meet and surpass regulatory guidelines. Great point that employed grads are very likely to repay their loans. Also Alumni will tell you about externships, job openings, and they can return to school to help staff. Another reason to set up an active Alumni Community at your… >>>

Eric, Sounds like you have great experience with planning and working budgets. They are great tools when used effectively. Budgets get everyone thinking about efficiency, productivity, and return on investment. When they ask for funds to run their departments and special projects staff will know to present data and facts. Also results and trend. They learn to watch for everything to measure.
