Eric, Good points. We think the job description should be written so it is easy to evaluate the individual's performance. We also think that there should be an expectation of creativity on the job, thinking out of the box, and offering ideas for handling tasks better. We view all staff as important Team members who can work cooperatively and on their own. There may be a new look in job descriptions to maximize the known and unknown talents of everyone. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Eric, WE agree. People enroll in school to get a job. Usually they care more about how the school will assist them to do that than the course work. Sounds like you offer comprehensive career services that are also customized to the student. That is so good. One on one support is key to success. It is great that you are staying in touch with employers and potential employers. They can give you great feedback about how well trained your grads really are. Also great that so many people at your school are involved in the employment process. We actually… >>>

Eric, Wow. You said it all about the reasons to have a plan. Sometimes a five year plan sounds so daunting that people don't do it or do things on the fly, as you noted. Even on the fly if you put in evaluations of how things are going, you can save the day. Five year plans are good because sometimes to get to year 5 you have to plan a detailed path for years 1 to 4. Sometimes plans can be made project by project. We feel one can be creative with the rules. The key issue is to identify… >>>

vidal, good points. Job descriptions need to let everyone know where each employee fits on the org chart and who reports to whom and how work is done. Also consider adding how the individual will be evaluated. We think job descriptions should encourage creativity and cooperation. Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
vidal, You are right. A plan is very important and very challenging. It doesn't have to be complex. What is important is to get everyone involved in the school involved in the plan. In this way you will get a lot of good ideas that everyone agrees to. What is also important is to constantly evaluate results. What is happening and how do activities support your plan. What needs to be changed? What is working. A plan means that everyone on staff is working towards the same goal. Thanks for your comments. Susan Dr. Susan Schulz

Josefina, Sounds like you are doing everything right and also have a checklist for things to be done. You have a lot of marketing strategies in place. The key is to measure measure measure. What are the results in terms of quantity and quality of prospective students? How can your website be optimized to attract the right students - those interested and qualified for your programs? Checking out curricula with employers is essential, in our opinion. Important to train to the needs of the workplace. Testimonials are great. Alumni testimonials are THE best. A strong reason to set up an… >>>

Josefina, Sounds great. Always good to have one person designated to work in community outreach. This also includes visiting employers and potential employers. Ask how your grads are doing on the job. What additional training do they need? This is the opportunity to find out what other training programs are needed in the work place. It gives the opportunity to develop these programs before your competition. While visiting in the workplace you can also find out what job openings are coming up and which employers are willing to visit your school to hold mock interviews or talk with grads about… >>>

Josefina, This is good Josefina. Publicity is about getting consistent and effective press where your qualified students are likely to see it. With any events you might hold you can send out promotions to local newspapers before, during, and after. Many news publications have calendar sections where you can post announcements of class starts dates, open houses, and more. You can even send graduation notices for each student to the local publication where they live. All this gets the Saber name out in the community. Then when you do paid advertising, Saber is already a familiar word. And let's not… >>>

Mary, Great Mary. Great list of networking organizations. The goal is to see which are worth your time. Not all are receptive to hearing about training or provide the opportunity to get your message out. And while you are one employee on staff it is important to manage your time, as you well know. As to our ribbon cutting and other events, there is good opportunity for publicity before, during, and after. Do you have a marketing department who can get involved? Great examples of staying in touch with employers. And keep in mind those companies that don't employ your… >>>

Mary, Wow. It's amazing what you are accomplishing. Sounds like you are requiring instructors to bring the world of work into their classrooms. Of course they should be doing that anyway. But you are giving them tools. That's great. Hope everyone reading these comments takes note! Thanks, Susan Dr. Susan Schulz
