Relying on word of mouth and your website is the best marketing, in our opinion. It says your school has established its brand as THE place for training. And that is a great position to be in. Of course it is important to monitor results and put in other marketing strategies as needed. Joining assocations is a great way for people to learn about your school. Student success stories bring amazing results. That's why many schools develop alumni associations with a focus on successful students. It is sooo motivating. New locations are reasons for press releases. It's a good idea… >>>

Great idea to track all student interaction with faculty and staff. Lots to learn in terms of trends or simply what might be missing in your curriculum. Some regulatory bodies require proof of student engagement with the school. All this impacts retention. thanks, susan
These are all great ideas. We believe in surveys and measuring everything possible to make effective improvements. Employers can be such a great source of information including what skills and knowledge are needed in the workplace. Field trips, job shadowing, externships, etc. are all great ways for students to get first-hand knowledge of the real world of work. And they see how what they learn is applied to the job. These are all reasons to have an active alumni association so you have people available to invite you students to a day or week at work. thanks, Susan
This is great. Especially since the instructor is often the constant in the life of a student. You might also want to cultivate your alumni. Successful and happy grads are happy to visit classrooms, talk about the world of work, mentor students, let students job shadow and more. MaxKnowledge offers a course in how to set up an alumni association. thanks, Susan
Sounds like you are keeping in touch with students throughout their studies. That's a good thing. We suggest that they be required to complete career services assignments along with other required courses. It takes a while to learn the job search skills and can't happen at the end of the training program. Re your surveys - hope you are compiling information, sharing with other departments, and making changes. Thanks, Susan

You may be new to Placement but you really know what is important, Paula. You are right that admissions needs to be armed with the facts about how your school trains students to get jobs, how you assist with the job search, and how successful grads are. We think that the Placement department should sit right along with Admissions! The reality is that prospective students want to know about where they are going to get jobs. That's the most important question when they interview. And you are right that Placement does impact on retention. When students see how successful grads… >>>

Sounds great. There is also lots of information to make decisions. We all have to remember to use it! Thanks, Susan
Good point. Support and a budget are certainly needed to implement any new idea. And a process for approval. Thanks, Susan
Sounds like a good plan. Does each Student Service representative report on their interaction and findings. Are any changes made as a result of these updates and any metrics derived? Thanks, Susan
You have definitely created a model career services department. If every school did this we might not have gainful employment issues! Thanks, Susan
