Hi Cindy, this is especially the case when you can see an expression on a learner and know that they are not understanding. In the online environment with the lack of visual cues, it is difficult to determine whether the learner is dis-engaged because they don't understand the materials or if it is because they are having a hard time organize their time. Tina
Hi Cindy, can you share some of the ways you challenge and stretch students? Tina
Thanks for sharing your perspective Chuck. You are right on!! In the school of undergraduate studies we have actually moved to a reading/writing assessment that all new learners have to pass before they can enroll at Capella. This has had a positive impact on the readiness of our learners. Tina

Yes, I agree. The issue is more than likely about not getting into the course early enough to cover all of the materials and complete the assignment in a timely manner. Any recommendations you can provide the learner for developing time management skills will help them complete activities in a timely manner. Tina

Hi Chuck, I agree that it can be difficult to resolve issues because of the time between communications, so I encourage my faculty to request a time to talk with learners by telephone to resolve issues. I do want to share with you a conversation that I had with an associate dean last week. At my university, chairs are being asked to improve persistence and learner success in the courses we manage. In my conversation with the associate dean I said that in a traditional course if learners didn't show up to class, the chair wouldn't be asking the instructor… >>>

Hi Angela, at the university I work at, we are working so hard to reach out to disengaged learners but it seems that no what how much outreach we do, we can not get them to respond to our communications and re-engage in the course. My faculty are frustrated because of the amount of time they spend in outreach that takes time away from the learners who are engaged! We have moved to a 3-step proactive communication strategy. After three attempts to re-engage the learner, we let the learner know that there is nothing further we can do to help… >>>

Hi Jenny, my kids are home from college this week and my one son who is a sophmore is telling me that next year all of the classes he has to take will be delivered online! This is at the University of Central Florida and they are using their f2f classrooms for Freshman and Sophmores and once they become Juniors, they move them to an online delivery!! Tina
Hi Marcus. I have also found this to be an optimal number; however, if the course has a lot of learners who are new to online learning, there can be a lot of learners who do not persist. To overcome this, I have had to front load the course in order to achieve the 15-17 learners who end up completing the course! Tina

Hi Chuck, one of the issues with learners who have strong self-efficacy is that it can be a double-edge because their confidence in their ability, may keep them from spending the needed time and effort on assignments. For the learner who knows she is not doing well, you are right about the importance of building the learners self-confidence. For this learner, are there specific metacognitive strategies that you can recommend to help her improve her planning, monitoring, and evaluation during learning? Tina
