Hi Carla:
Thanks, ultimatly it's our relationship with our students that we get anything accomplishes. So the better the relationship, the better the learning environment.

Hi Amy:
Confidence is extrememly important. Our students need to feel we know our stuff and are in control.

Hi Laura:
Boy that's great. People like to be entertained and it's not innappropriate for the classroom. Sometimes keeping the students interest requires a lot of energy, creativity, and enthusisam on the teachers part to keep the students interest.

Hi Cindy:
Great! We all have personalities and preferences for teaching we like. We just need to make sure what we like is not substitutued for what the student needs.

My sparkling personality and passion for nursing makes for intersting lectures, therefore, I tend to lecture more.
I have an outgoing personality and study acting on the side. I like to use different accents, mannerisms, and props in my presentations. With any given audience I can usually find some quote, or scene from film or television that everyone can identify with to incorporate into the lesson. I find that throwing in an accent at random during a lecture is an immediate attention getter, especially when there is a bit of humor attached.
Hi Rocco:
I think confidence plays a big part in how an instructors personality is portrayed in the classroom. Confident instructors are able to get the point across with finesse - their own brand of themselves. Lesser confident teachers may try to emulate someone else, and as you imply - it can flop. No flops, please.
Regards, Barry
Personality identifies how you will instruct your students. For me personally, I use enjoy using different delivery strategies that incorporate technology such as PowerPoint, collaborative learning and group discussions. I am a type of person that learns from watching, doing and engaging others which I employ in the classroom. I have seen other instructors using similar techniques that just didn't come off well in the classroom - it seemed very contribed and not natural which students can sense.
By including personality in the delivery method ("teaching style") the teacher will be more comfortable "in their own skin" and this confidence gains the respect and attention of the students. Everyone has their own style and when they deviate too far from it, they can appear awkward, which can distract from their teaching.
I believe that personality plays a large role in establishing the attitude of the classroom. I am very upbeat and enjoy interacting with my students, which describes me in the classroom environment. My students tend to get excited about course content, when they see how excited I am to teach a class. My delvivery methods are mixed. I use color, graphics, and animations in my presentations. I also use music, as I think each of these stimulates different students.
I agree with you statement, connecting with our students is essential. By implementing our personalities it allows the students to view us are human beings. Honestly for me when I'm instructing whether it be lab or lecture it a performance. Treat the classroom as your stage!
When teaching, I try as much as possible to be myself – letting my personality, human side come out as much. I use examples, some of them personal stories to highlight points I want to convey. This has had the intended effect (my students see me as a person and human).
Hi Denise:
I agree there's something exciting about an enthusiastic instructor. It's contagious!
Regards, Barry
When students see that you are enthusiastic about what you are teaching, they become enthusiastic about learning the material.
Hi Rick:
I think a lot of teachers feel like you do. I think one way to overcome being too boring is by showing enthusiasm and being truly passsionate about our topic. It can be contagious!
Regards, Barry
My personality definitely effects the presentation. Since I am more of a low key person, I have to make sure I over animate myself or I come across as boring
Hi Dorrell:
I also think personality gives the students a vision and/or inspiration of what they can achieve if their instructor is dynamic: enthusiastic, caring and compassionate, knowledgeable and informative, approachable and available - gosh, who wouldn't want a teacher like that. As teachers, we can all aspire to be better.
Regards, Barry
If your presentation skills are weak, it is very important that you choose a delivery approach that will assist you in your effects of deliver. Some instructors are awesome delivers who need minimum assistance to drive their instruction.
Hi Richard:
Animated instructors are fun to be around and tend to keep the class more focused and engaged then less active instructors. Tone, emphasis, body language - these can all give the student obvious or latent clues to what is important and aids the memory and retention process.
