I love using videos clips from youtube or other internet sources when I'm teaching anatomy and the function of the different body systems. It helps the student visualize the process rather than just looking at a picture or reading about it in a book.

Hi Bonnie:

Selecting material and presenting it in a visual, audio, and kinesthetic way is generally considered the most efficient method of delivery.

Hi Cindy:

One idea when selecting course material and media is to try employ as many teaching styles as we can in order to address as many learning styles as possible. Selecting material and presenting it in a visual, audio, and kinesthetic way is considered the most efficient method of delivery.

Hi Annette:

One general, all-purpose guideline to remember about using power-point is this – don’t read the slides to the students. Unless you’re deliberately trying to make a point, reading slides is the quickest way to have students tune out during the lesson.

Instead, it’s better to cover the main points on the slide, and have the students refer to the notes on their own.

Our curriculum is standardized and therefore, we are required to lecture for a specific amount of time and we have specific handouts and activities that must be used. Very difficult in selecting instructional media for diversified learning styles.

I would like to create my own powerpoint presentation for content delivery but I am open also to publisher's PP presentation. I may use some of theirs and combine mine. I will use whatever will work for my student's best interest in learning.

In selecting media first you have to use what is available. There are great new technologies available but if they are not available at your school they aren't a good choice.

Another thing that is hard to remember today is to be sure the student says "What will they say next" as opposed to "what will happen next". If the presentation overpowers the message no one will remember the message. Much like a movie with special effects. If you come out saying "what great effects", they weren't worth it. If you come out saying "what a great movie" and remember the plot ad only later realize the techinal inovations needed to progress the plot, then they were totally worth it.

One problem I have with PowerPoint presentations that come with textbooks is they are simply the chapter rewritten on slides. They can be up to 150 slides. No graphics. Nothing will put a class to sleep faster.

I'm "old school" and feel most comfortable with the overhead projector and posters, but I know my audience really enjoys powerpoint. So I take advantage of the book company's ppt's and mix it up in my presentation. This seems to keep the students engaged by switching to different visuals.

I like using Power Point because the students like having something to look at, but often I forget to advance the slide when I am ready to move on to the next point. The publishers power point resources are a great addition to my lectures, and I make as much use of them as I can. We also use Sync Screens, and I am just starting to use those but hope to be more experienced with it and using it more effectively in the future.

Hi Tim:

You are describing an attitude of being a student centered instructor.

One of the best ways of being a student-centered instructor is to consistently be flexible in our approach. This may be difficult, especially with technical course work that must be delivered to the student in order for them to move on in a training program.

However, if we can always keep in mind the teaching methods that work best for your student group, and having a willingness to make changes in delivery on the fly will promote the outcomes that are in the best interests of our students.
