Hi Elsie:
Using pretests may also allow the instructor to see what kind of learner the student is.

By having this information, the instructor can efficiently plan the lessons to cater to the student learning type.

Hi Kamarah:
Great point - one idea that might come out of this would be pairing stronger students with "weaker" students.

This technique is often used to give the "weaker" students a different perspective of the material.

Hi Marcia:
To continue in the same vein of your comment, the instructor can also use these pretests as a way of seeing what kind of learning methods are best for their class.

Hi Jose:
In addition, pretests are a good way for the instructor to evaluate what kind of learning the student uses to gain new information.

By knowing this, the instructor can also prepare their information more efficiently.

Hi Marcia:
Additionally, it provides the instructor a chance to see how students look at problems and new information.

By seeing what type of student you have, an instructor can more adequately prepare to impart the information in an efficient way.

A pretest can help with instructional planning by providing the instructor with important feedback about the students’ current knowledge level. If all of the students are fully prepared with background knowledge to start the course, then the instructor can focus on delivering the course materials and class activities. If some of the students are fully prepared and some are not, then the instructor will have to provide some additional learning opportunities and materials so that all students can be successful in the class. If none of the students are prepared for the course, the instructor may need to provide extensive resources and learning opportunities to help students become prepared for the class. Also, the instructor may want to discuss the situation with administrators to find a solution to the problem.

Hi Catherine:
Right - and it may also give you some insight of the type of learner your student is. While we may not have the time to create a learning plan for every student, we can group similar learning styles together.

Hi Shannon:
In addition to giving you an idea of the student's academic status, it can also show you what kind of learner the student is.

Hi Gregory:
In addition to learning where a student is academically, pre-tests can also be a good way to see what kind of learner a student is.

This of course depends of the type of test you are using.

A pretest will determine whether the student is fully preapared to handle the course.

Hi Neelam,

Pre-tests are an excellent method of learning what type of student learner you have.

Of course, most institutions use these tools as a method of gauging how much foreknowledge a student has upon entering the course, but they can reveal so much more about a student.

Barry

It's actually a simple way to "connect" yourself to the student. It lets the student know that you are developing class content based on their knowledge and skills. It also helps you as an instructor develop an effective course content.

Pretesting your students is a good tool because you can get a baseline of what each student knows and where each students has areas of concern. Which then helps you to be able to strive to bring the students to a good level of learning.

What do you do with a group of underqualified students when you are required to follow a 'set' syllibus and 'time frame'? It would be great to have 'all the time in the world' to run remmedial class time...but when all the students need to complete Compentencies and Learner Outcomes in the same frame of time, there is no way (that I know of) to get all of the students thru the process...some pass, some fail.

Pretest can assist an instructor on how to prepare for his or her instructional method. It enables you to prepare the course to be given, and at what level and how to increase the level as you monitor your students.

The pretest is an aid for the instructor as well as the student. Hopefully, after the completing the pretest, the student will understand his or her knowledge of the course and may think that he or she will need to apply themselves more so.

It allows you to prepare a presentation based on your students current knowledge base of the material to be covered. Not all students will be on the same page at once, so you can alter the amount and depth of material to be covered to arrive at a "happy medium." Just enough to engage those with some knowledge and not too much to overwhelm those with little knowledge.

I find this is a good tool to find the skill level of each entering class. You can adjust the instruction if need to be to keep the class engaged or challenged.

You can easily see where your students skills are so you can teach to their level.

A pretest helps me to determine the student knowledge on the subject

To see where the students are at. It gives you a baseline where you should start teaching.
