I define instructional professionalism as do our students have a take away from tonights lesson? Will they take what they learned tonight to their workplace tomorrow. Are we teaching the students to fish or are we just giving them the fish!

I define Instructional Professionalism as the mindset I approach my teaching with; dressing appropriately, planning my lessons, having appropriate teaching materials, handouts, etc., and most importantly, interacting with my students, ensuring that they are comprehending the lesson and changing my methods midstream if I am loosing them.

Instructional professionalism gives nonverbal cues to students that shape and form their expectations of a course. If an instructor appears and acts the part of a professional through appearance, mannerisms, punctuality, and preparedness, students will respect the instruction itself far more.

Hi Shana,
Good points and right on the target in terms of setting the tone for the course. We must present ourselves in a professional manner if we expect our students to respect us and want to engage in the learning process with us.
Gary

Instructors are the first role model of the profession to the students. If the instructor is late and unprofessionally dress, the students will interpret this conduct as acceptable behavior for class, externship and the job.

Instructional professionalism is a combination of using different learning styles to ensure the learners comprehend information and modeling the correct behavior of the profession to the learners.

Instructional Professionalism knowing your material and being equip tp presen it, in a professional manner. Dressing appropriately, being prepared, and being on time are just as important as the material itself.

To me it means acting as a professional. One must treat the students with the utmost respect and demand the same of them. After all, I am setting the example for behavior that they need to emulate when in the workplace.

1st Onetime and early prepared for students. Also to show a good presents that you look and care.

2nd Be able to Manage and keep class ongoing with material and lecture. Having students converse to and from professor and amongst students as well

3rd Be able to keep enthusiasm amongst students and interest ongoing.

By being prepared for class, being professional at all times, knowing the material will motivate the students.

Totally agree with being the role model in the classroom. By being prepared for class, being professional at all times, knowing the material will motivate the students.

Hi Sabrina,
You are so right with your statements of what you bring to the classroom. You are showing them what a professional in their field should look and act like which is an important part of their career development.
Gary

Hi Janae,
Well said. You are demonstrating to your students what a person in the field should be like.
Gary

Hi Martin,
Well said. You are helping them to acquire not only the technical skills needed for success but the soft skills as well. Both are important for career success.

I define instructional professionalism as the concept of professional competence along with instructional style. It’s important to plan ahead in all aspects of your class but it’s important to remember that your topic is something your students will pursue as future careers and goals. Delivering the material from the book and assessing each student’s ability to absorb that information is an important part of their curriculum, but books aren’t the only way to teach your students. For example, I teach students in a field that I currently have a second job in. Bringing in examples from work and dressing as I would for that job will show them what will be expected (which in my case involves a lab jacket and closed toe shoes for example). I feel like my students view me as a professional, because I bring my other job with me to teach presenting them with that out-of-classroom learning experience.

I define instuctional professionalsim by the way you carry yourself in a classroom and the attitude you have. It is also important to show compassion for the students and to be excited with and for them when instructing. It all shines through to the students and they feed off of that.

It means a little of every thing involve with profashion

I teach at a technicial school where the student's are actually graded on professionalism.
They must dress correctly, correct shoes, belt and haircut.
I have to be correct in all of these ways myself before I could grade my class on having anything wrong.
I have to be the role model.

Hi Joan,
You make a number of good points in terms of getting the content to the point that students can really internalize it as well as make it a part of their working memory. Yes, we may need to go back over the material several times but that is ok because the students get to process it to the point they can see the relevancy of what they are being taught.

Instructional Professionalism is preparation for the class, management of the coursework and students, and assessment. It is the continual review of the way a lesson was delivered and the reception of the students toward the material. Many times the instructor will discover that the lesson has not been a rousing success. Problems arise from many directions. Sometimes the lesson was a failure because the material was either too difficult or too easy. Before the class arrives, an instructor must plan, think through the lesson, create the PowerPoint or handouts (examples), write the quiz or test, and set up equipment. Then the instructor must prepare himself or herself by creating the learning environment. This includes the appearance of the classroom as well as the appearance of the instructor. Assessment involves the students' understanding of the lesson as well as how well the lesson was delivered. In WV, we had a learning program called Teach/Reteach. Instructors many times need to admit that the lesson was not easily absorbed by the student. In that case, reteaching is an important element. Many factors are involved in instructional professionalism. These are only a few of them.
