Before starting new module, I always spend some time to make goals and objective for my class. I keep this in mind that new class can be either good or challenging, so I make plans for both. First day, I introduce myself to all my students and then ask them to tell me about themselves. This has been helped me to make my goals based upon their level of learning. I encourage my students to participate in class discussion. I love to answers questions asked my students. Last but not least I always keep my student's interest on the top.

Thanks.

I can better use computer technology; for example, use powerpoints to quiz students, not merely present information to them.

I feel strongly that not only is there subject lecture in class, but something "hands-on" that allows the students to interact with the subject. I also learn their names quickly and use their names in class any chance I get. When this is done, I see how they relax and feel part of the class. I try to send the message that I may be the instructor of the class, but we are all a group and are going to journey through it together.

The other day, I asked one of the teachers to sit in my class and give me constructive suggestions and I did the same with her class. We both learned from each others style so much. I encourage you to do the same.

Repetition is the mother of all memory.

Agreed! That is another way to increase our experience... therefore our own learnig.. Great idea!

I don't believe in Traditional class system. In other words, only instructor is keep talking and students are listening. I believe in interaction with students is the most important key tool to make class more live and interesting. I am teaching statistics. I am explaining theory part and then , show the application. I mean, real world, word problem. Ask, students to use the theory/formula to apply for that problem. No spoon feeding. As i mentioned before, i am teaching at career college, so my students are older then actual college, but at the same time less healthy educational background then regular students. But positive part is that they are old enough to see the application of theory easier then younger group of students. Usually all my students are from different major. So i always take word problem related to their major.

I need to take more time to explain the demonstration I get so excited about doing the actual demonstration I tend to forget about the students that dont learn as quickly as the next student

Hi Lawrence,
Good point. I to have taught for many years and I really enjoy sitting in on other classes and watching presenters. I always take away something of benefit after one of these sessions.
Gary

Hi William,
This is always a good strategy. Seeing others present gives one some many different ideas about how to expand and improve their own presentation skills.
Gary

Hi Kevin,
As a result of paying attention to what others are doing how have you expanded your teaching expertise?
Thanks for you input on this.
Gary

Hi Lennox,
Good plan. Seeing other instructors and presenters sharing their content gives an instructor a lot of new ideas and strategies that can be incorporated into one's teaching delivery.
Gary

Hi Barbara,
A simple thing yet with great returns.
Gary

Hi Holly,
These are all good growth points. The more input we have the better we can grasp how to expand and improve our instructional delivery. This is a win win for everyone.
Gary

Hi RK,
Good professional development plan. You have some very sound learning theories within which you are operating. I know your students are benefiting from this practical and effective approach.
Gary

I am enjoying this training. I have been teaching a long time and have a Master's Degree in Education. Sometimes, we get so busy it is easy to forget the fundimentals. This brings it back.

During break the instructors share our teaching experiences and we learn from each other.

Kevin, interesting I have similar thoughts on self-reflection. It is most appropriate to take time after sessions to highlight the good, bad and even the ulgly. Through acquired experiences and by capturing lessons learned you can employ ways to better techniques and be more effective with presenting information.

The ultimate goal, as you know, is that students will have an enriching learning experience. Achievement of this goal can be realized through instruction that is well prepared and that will be well recieved by the students. A well developed instructional style is a way to get the job done!
