Our institution will test each student to discover their individual learning style. This gives me as an instructor a better idea of how to effectively convey the information to them!

For me, instructional style changes with different classes. More homogeneous, professionally oriented, mature, classes call for a different style than a more diverse class who don't have the sense of how the subject fits into their field of interest. With all, I attempt a conversational model to encourage student input and participation. The way I can weld the conversational model with the more formal lecture/demonstration of my math lessons changes from one class to another.
I'm always looking for connections between the material and the fields my students are studying. Making the material relevant goes far toward getting the students involved.

Robert,
Yes, I believe it does. This learning format helps the students to be able to internalize and store needed content in their long term memory base at a higher rate of retention.

TaKara,
The more blending of instruction the better. This way you are appealing to an engaging a wider variety of learning preferences from your students and this will increase their focus on the learning process.

Harold,
One way is to observe the culture of your school and the demographics of your students. Information from these sources will help you to see how you can shape your instructional delivery in a way that will get students engaged.

I plan to keep the Pimsleur Method for learning languages in mind when teaching. I find that the constant revisiting of information during a class helps retain subject knowledge tremendously. Would you agree that this method would also translate to any subject aside from learning languages?

Coming from a country where the use of modern teaching tools and other instructional aids are not common, my instructional style had to be adjusted to accomodate the needs of my students.
My enrollment in this course (and other classes that I plan to take)is a firt step for me to smoothly transition from my old fashion style.

i use a little bit of everything! i like to do hands on for my students who have to actually perform the procedure. i also like to use power point slides.

How can you develop the instructional style focusing on the institution culture and needs?

Fernanda,
I think the videos will be a nice addition to your instructional delivery. You are using the different senses to help the students to see the value of the content and skills they need to learn.

Pamela,
Great way to engage students. You are using a variety of activities to get your students into the course content and gaining the required knowledge. This is what teaching should be about.

My instructional style consists of lecture with the use of Powerpoint to emphasis key points from the chapter. I plan to incorporate the utilization of a hands on video taped during our dental lab class. This will enable the students to be able to review the various dental procedures that we performed in the dental lab. This will enhance learning and incorporate students working together as a dental team.

I can improve my instructional style by continuing to get more familiar with the content. This includes examining more research or styles that convey my subject matter and sitting in the classes of other instructors.

Doctor Meers,
I find that reaching out to my peers on a daily basis helps to shape my instructional style. I find that utilizing my peers expands my knowledge of instrcution and helps to make me a better teacher.

I take a more personal/professional approach with much consideration of my audience. I always engage with the learners to find out what their thoughts are about the course subject(s). I consider their age, gender, ethnicity, grade level, personality, etc., which all factors in which instructional style I will teach from. When the audience's minds and hearts are opened, I become more animated. I am more of a visual hands on learner, and engaging individuals to participate and try hands on methods is a great ice breaker, and almost always cause the learner to retain the information better and return demonstration when called upon.

Sharita,
Good strategy to have to inform your students about your subject area. The more you invest the more valuable your content will be to your students.
