Mary,
I think you will like the results you get from handing out a well prepared syllabus to your students. For me it reduces student questions that revolve around course requirements since they are listed in the syllabus and it gives the students a sense of comfort because the policies and assignments are there in front of them from day one.

I did not understand the good things that come from handing out a syllabus. My school is a vocational setting with several campuses. We too have a set, consistent curriculum to follow. I have not been using the syllabus but I will now. It will lay out my expectations, help the students to make the most of their time ,and help both the students and myself to have an optimal learning experience
A well prepared syllabus will not only give the instructor a solid outline and guidance in course intruction, but it provides the student with all of the information they need to succeed in the course. It is a written contract providing them with all poilcies and procedures, dates, grading etc. If something is not covered in class, or they miss what is said, it is all writtne down for them. it sets the tone for the course and provides lear expectations of the students' performance.
yes often the sudent wont use them and you need to ask them to refer back to them over and over again
Peri,
Right you are and this is why it is so important to have a clear and concise syllabus. This gets the course off to a good start because everyone has the same information.

Christy,
It is the road map or GPS for the course. A well prepared syllabus also reduces student questions and frustrations because the information is there for them to review as needed.

A course syllabus allows both the student and the instructor to be on the same page as relates to expectations of the course. It will allow the student to understand what is expected of them and how they can accomplish learning objectives. It will also give them a time-line by which to plan study and preparation for each class session.
Yes a well-prepared syllabus does make a difference. It has your policies, requirements, expectations, and all the other course information. Not just great for the students but also great for the instructors.
Nicole,
A well prepared syllabus can save a lot of time for the instructor as well as frustration on the part of the students. The contents of the syllabus lists the expectations and helps the students see how they fit into the course.

Having a well-prepared syllabus allows for the instructor to list all course essentials from course information, texts, grading and attendance policies, etc. It also should provide a good overview of what's going to be taught in the course and the layout of the class.
Jarred,
Great to hear the value that came from this section. I wish you continued teaching success and I know your revised syllabus will help your students to prepare themselves for your class and be informed about what the expectations are when they enter it.

Jaime,
You get to experience a well prepared syllabus from both sides. As a student you know what you want to see so as an instructor you know how to prepare a syllabus that will be informative and supportive to the students.

Timberly,
A well prepared syllabus gives the outline of the course and the requirements for success in the course. As a result the students know from day one what the expectations are and how they can be successful in the course. This reduces their frustrations and answers many of their questions.

Kulsoom,
Right you are about a well prepared syllabus. It is the road map that the students will follow as they progress through the course.

This section drove me to change and update the syllabus for the course I teach. After looking at the syllabus, course outline and reviewing some of the student comment cards from past classes I was able to revise the syllabus to make it more explanatory for the students. I am in a trade school so I don't have the traditional college course layouts but I intend to hand this document out two days before class begins and allow the students to become familiar with it and also to have an expectation of what is to come in the class. Obviously nothing is perfect the first time around but my fellow instructors have reviewed it and seem to think it should only need some minor tweaking after a couple of class uses.
I am a student myself and refer to the syllabus daily for the different courses I take. If students have a clear, detailed plan, they can assume responsibility and accountablility of their own actions. Thay can manage their time more efficiently and have a very clear picture of what is expected of them. If the syllabus is not clear or incorrect, that paints a poor picture of the instructor and the students don't see you as a good role model.
Hi,
To ensure that the main topic of the course will be covered and to clearly state what is the expectation from the students, the course, and the instructor.
Thanks

Well prepared syllabus keep us on pace. help to divide time appropriatly and help to maintained the equal distribution of course
A well-prepared syllabus gets everyone on the same track and the same mind-set. It helps to read the syllabus aloud to the students on the first day so all the students can hear all the questions and answers. It is a good idea to have a page for them to sign so they agree to the objectives and policies listed. The syllabus gives the students a framework for work expected and if they would enjoy taking the class.
Alicia,
I agree. It sends a very clear message you are prepared and ready to share with your students.
