It helps the student understand where we as instructors want them to go and how we are going to get them there. Basically, we write the goals on the main concepts we want them to learn. The objectives is more detailed approach in how we our going to achieve our goals.
First, knowing WHO is taking the course. Having a clear understanding of the knowledge and skills these students possess upon entering the course. Knowing what is they want to do (learn) and having a thorough understanding of the level of proficiency that is required.
i so agree with you. everyclass needs to be structured and organized to be effective and benficial to the students
Frances,
You make a very good point in relation to chunking the content in such a way as to show students what they are going to cover and how they can acquires that knowledge and skill set. This is a critical component of teaching that needs to be planned for each time the class meets.
Gary
David,
You make a good point that clear goals and objectives are not only beneficial to the students but also for the instructor. I know it keeps me focused on what needs to be done in the class. Sometimes there are distractions but the goals and objectives bring you back out of the ditch and onto the road.
Frances
I totally agree that ongoing feedback is critical in the student's success in the course. It also has to be meaningful feedback that the student can use moving forward.
Frances
It is important for students to know what is covered in the class and how they will be assessed for the class. Students are very interested not only in the content but how the learning of the content will be assessed.
Students also need to know that the course proceeds in a good sequence that aids in the learning process. For example, in my software classes, it is important to "chunk" the assignments for each software program sequentially so students can take what was learned in the previous lesson and use it in the next lesson while learning new skills.
Frances
Falicia,
Right you are. This way the students know what the expectations are and can work toward them with confidence.
Gary
It is important to have clear goals and objectives fo a course so that the instructor can be prepared to present the material in a professional manner and they can prepare to teach the course fully and have all resource materials and support materials available.
Clear goals and objectives are also important as they provide focus points for the course so that students can identify their objectives and come to class prepared.
It is important to have clear goals and objectives for the course so that the students know what to expect. Students are not always tradional snd have or obligations and this will help them meet both their school and home needs
Karen,
Well said and so important to the students as they know the standards by which they will be judged as well as the skill sets they are expected to acquire.
Gary
It is important to have clear goals and objecives for my course because the students will understand what they will be learning in the lesson. The goals are broad which may include, "The student will learn reading stratigies and apply them to their everyday life." Objectives are statements of behavior that the student will exhibit. For example, "After reading the reading prompt, the student will answer comprehension questions with at least 70% accuracy. The objectives should include the audience, behavior, condition and degree. This way the students will understand the accuracy of understanding. Every lesson should have an objective. The objective is the statement of what a student should be able to do as a result of instruction. What they are going to learn and how they will know they have learned it.
Craig,
So true. Good point about keeping them informed so they don't become stressed out as the course progresses.
Gary
Clear goals and objectives help students understand what is expected and covered throughout the duration of the course. It also helps students to get ahead in their reading.
I have found that the students want and need direction. They also want to learn what they will need when they start their new career. They like the fact that they know what they will be studying, why they are studing this particular subject and what they will be tested on .
My students do not like surprises so I give them as much information about my expectations as possible up front. It seems to ease a lot of fears.
Kim,
Yes. What is the value for both the students and the instructor in having clear goals and objectives?
Gary
Do u mean what is the importance to having clear goals and objectives in my course??
Clear goals and objectives are essential to a well-organized course. They provide learners with the structure needed to facilitate a positive learning experience.
Emil,
Well said. These are three very good reasons for the writing good goals and objectives.
