I like starting out a class sounding firm and strict. I found that it is always easier to loosen up as the class progresses than to try and get more strict as time move on.

clear expectations, authoritive and commanding voice with presence

I use the sylabus to review what is expected of them. I also leave time for questions from the students.

I like having class discussions and having the students work in groups and also using case study and problem based learning in the classroom.

By going over the syllabus and carefully discussing all the expectations.

HAving clear expectation is a must. This gives the students direction and a foundation tobuild on to become a successful student.

Hi Rose,
What are some other ways you could make your expectations know to your students?
Thanks.
Gary

Hi Angela,
Right you. Clear expectations reduce student frustrations and confusion. They know the expectations and can develop own strategies for how to meet those expectations.
Gary

Verbal, hand-outs, syllabus, weekly calendars.
Daily objectives on the board.

By orally telling students the expectatons, then give them the expectations in writing, then check for comprehehnsion.

talk in a clear strong voice.

Hi Angela,
This is so important and so true. Clear concise information reduces student frustration and increases engagement.
Gary

When the expectations are clearly defined and discussed, there is better compliance.
The student will know everything up front and they can plan accordingly. They will know what days are desinated for what activity and when work is due. When there is no confusion, the class flow is best, and is a wonderful learning environment.

Hi Justin,
I think this is a good idea. I do the same thing. The handout is a one page pull it all together document that support the syllabus. It is in bullet listing form so I can refer to each key point and reinforce it on the first day after we have gone through the syllabus.
Gary

Hi Jumana,
Good way to set the stage for the course. This way the students understand the course expectations and can plan their studies around those expectations.
Gary

Dr. Meers,

I don't just ahnd out a syllabus. I also hand out a typed sheet that has all of my expectations on it. We discuss this and I also ask for their expectations for the class as well. I find that this creates a sense of ownership with the students and that sense keeps them engaged.

On the first day of the coarse I handout Syllabus and go through it with the students step by step. I also go through the quiz policy and how it is graded and the make up policy so that all of us start on the same page and the journey is pleasant

Hi Dr. Dunlap,
Good plan to make everything clear for the students. You strategy of having the students bring their experiences into the class discussion is a good way to demonstrate that they have something to contribute and that you will be listening to and respecting their input.
Gary

Hi Tammara,
This is a great way to demonstrate student responsibility. This shows them what they have to do and with many students coming to class with an "entitlement" attitude this keeps success focused on their efforts.
Gary

Hi Linda,
Good analogy to use with the students. This way they can get a graphic grasp about how the course is going to operate and what they need to do to be successful.
