Hi Caren,
What strategies have you used with repetition that has worked well for you?
Gary
Being a first time instructor, it's interesting to find, that I have taught more towards my learning style and how my favorite instructors taught. I'm so thankful I have these resources to help me learn to become better for my students.
The students are only allowed to miss only a few hours of class time. We have 5 week modules. So they can miss 8hours and this helps them from missing time. I also encourage them by informing them that anytime they miss is valuable time and they could miss key points from the course content or test material.
Hi Doris,
What are some of the most effective situations that have helped your students with their retention?
Gary
I try to utilize a number of different lecture techniques (writing notes on the board, using powerpoints, lecture, and demonstration) to get the information to the students. Often all of those techniqes are used simultaneously. I also find that repetition of key points helps to make them stick.
I use some of life's experiences to point out situations that help students to remember.
Hi Christin,
Learning is enhanced through multiple applications and that is what you are doing with your method of delivery. When there is a connection between cognitive acquirement and tactile application the retention of content is enhanced greatly. Keep up the good work.

Hi Michael,
That is why I always volunteer to go on site visits at culinary schools. The beauty, texture and taste of the food makes the trip worthwhile even when I have to set through long meetings.

I do try to find different means of covering material, especially with beginning students so that they are exposed to several ideas of how to learn the material. Then hopefully they can continue to use what works best.
I like to use stories from my past experiences to have the student understand that I have been where they are in their career's.
I use examples from my past experiences and relate them to the course content.
I find that because I teach computer based, technical courses, many of my students do not retain much of the information unless it is hands on.
Hi Heidi,
Two ways that I have done this is to have students present a demonstration to the rest of the class. They cover all of the skill components in procedure and I use a grading rubric that enables me to show them how they did at the end of the demonstration. Another is to give them a problem solving situation or case study and have them solve or resolve the problem.

A well developed lesson plan contains many ways for the student to learn.
Cooking provides the exploration of all of the sences.
I make sure that I talk about real life experiences and how it applies to the work world.
I had never considered assessment measures that address various learning styles. How can kinesthetic learners be tested in a way that better evaluates their knowlege?
I find that the students are generally hands on so I try to give them as much hands on experience as I can
Their are several learning theory's that must be introduced to students to create a active learning environment. I begin to think upon my instruction, I will intergrate Learning theory's to accommodate my students learing experience.
I make sure that I have activities and assessment measures that honor all the different learning styles. I know that some of my students will be good test takers while others will be good at writing papers. My classes are very interactive so that students have time to discuss the topic.

I use real scenarios from my carreer that I am involved in, into class projects. This way the student is practicing and solving a real problem that actually took place. It is also fun to discuss the outcome with the students.
