Hi Kenneth,
This is a good approach because you are spreading out the different learning preference opportunities for your students. They can focus on the different ways as they progress through the course and have success at each point.
Gary
Hi Avia,
Application and relevancy has to be integral to the instructional process. Your approach enables the students to see how they can use their newly acquired knowledge and skills. Great job with this strategy.
Gary
I inform my students that there are different types of learners and discuss with them things that they would like to see in the class and accomadate those needs. I might not need to do this all in one class but I will try to address each of different topics.
I plan on asking the students to read the text before class to accomodate those with the written learning preference. The lecture accomodates the hearing learning preference. During the lecture, I work through the problems on the board to accomodate those with the visualization learning preference and I assign homework problems for those who learn best with the tactile preference.
I tend to relate the course contents to everyday life and make it understandable by using terms, examples, and demostrations
Hi Patricia,
Good to hear. You are going to have great success with your mini-lectures I know. Keep up the good work you are doing.
Gary
I learned so much in this module; I will keep the mini lecture in mind. My plan would be to mix things up in between to reach as many learning styles as possible.
I have fond away to incorporate hands on learning to the material I find alot of my students are visual learners and by doing they grasp and retain alot of the information
I give exercises that they will develope further in other classes
Hi Misty,
You are using a good approach to identifying the learning preferences of your students. As you get to know your students you will be able to target your delivery as well so everyone will benefit from your effort.
Gary
To me, accommadating the different learning preferences of each student is the most challenging aspect of teaching. Actually, on the first day of class, I ask which ways the students learn best. From this survey, I develop my instructional style accordingly. This has been the best way I have found to plan effectively and efficiently for learning preferences.
I believe in working with students in their zone of proximal development. By allowing students to work at their own pace, I find more success.
Hi Daniel,
You have given some very good advice for instructors. Sometimes new instructors feel overwhelmed with all that they have to do. By stepping back and thinking about how to approach the classroom with creativity as you mentioned they will be able to meet the needs of their students. Thanks for sharing with us this information.
Gary
This one is pretty tough sometimes. Most people today would tell me that they are visual learners; however, if I put up slides on a Powerpoint presentation, they tend not to absorb the material. In my experiences, I would tend to claim that most learners like interactive learning and lots of movement. I also like the engagement of group activities, but give students the option to perform the work on their own if they so choose. Sometimes, from there, it is a matter of creativity on the part of the instructor. Quite often, one class is set up perfectly for one learning style, but when a new class of students arrives, that class is full of compeltely different styles. When this happens, the instructor had better be prepared to think fast and adjust quickly to the new styles that he sees in front of him.
Provide examples of a technique and what type of patient you would use this technique on.
Student particaption is so impaotent to the learning proccess. I encourage it when ever possible
Following the course objectives I frequently relate the topics being discussed with examples the students will see in the field.
Hi Cynthia,
Good strategy. Thanks for sharing it with us. Turning Points really help to keep the students engaged and contributing to the class. I know your students appreciate your effort in encouraging them to contribute what they are learning to the total class discussion.
Gary
One method that I have found that I really like and I think the students stay focus is using Turning Points, having questions in a PowerPoint of the chapter keeps them focused, and involved. I also feel it helps with hitting several learning styles, those that need to read and see the question can, we always read the question and answers out loud for those that need to hear it and for those tha need to do it, they are using their turning point clickrs to actually answer the question themselves. I really wish I had more time in my schedule for preparing more use of Turning Point but for some of my classes it is getting pretty good shape.
