If you have a variety of ways to reach the students you will be able to get the materal they need across to everyone.
I try to give different forms of instruction. I may use a little lecture, a little demonstration, a little video, and a little reading. Also we use a lot of trial and error as well.
Finding out what the goals are of the student and make slight modifications to your class to see if you can meet some of those goals, but still meet the objectives of the course.
Hi Christopher,
This connection also helps to build the bridge to the next step in students' lives. They see the application and relevancy to what they are learning and this gets them ready to enter the real world.
Gary
I connect the classroom to the world outside. I bring in news clippings, web links and other information that the students can access to gain an greater understanding of how the course material relates to real world events.
At our school, we go into lab after lecture, to apply what they've just learned, to a real life situation.
gaining a thorough understanding of all of the outline subject matters to be taught, discussed and creative ideals of making the learning materials fun & exciting.
This is very difficult especially if you are in a lab class and you have a learner who does better by lecture or reading and not hands on. Unfortunetly I think everyone is a little short changed because we forcus a short time on all styles of learning and do not focus for any significant time on any one style. In a perfect world I suppose there would be classes offered in the way a learner learns best!
I vary my class between lectures, study times, hands on projects, and games.
This course builds on the techniques and principles demonstrated in previous courses.Student will develop skills in the identification,
Show students how concepts learned in class are used in a real-world setting (this helps them understand, and gives them a rationale for why they need to learn this). Younger students grew up watching Sesame Street, so they want to be entertained; try to avoid the boring "lecture at them" approach.
Instructors have no choice in choosing material.
When forty sections of math101 are given, the instructor can only deliver what was pre assigned.
That is so true. Very important to gain rapport.
Hi Roseanne,
On the human side of teaching you use the same techniques as you have in your medical practice. Respect and rapport are critical for teaching success.
On the delivery side, break the content down into small segments so the students can build on the sequence of content and see how far they have progressed during the course.
Help them to "connect the dots" between what is being taught in the classroom/lab and the real world and you will have done a great job of instructing.
Observe other instructors use the BASE model. "Borrow And Share Everything" This way everyone will benefit.
Gary
Although, more course content on positions outside the classroom. I am the clinical coordinator for an Ultrasound program. I had been out in the field working as a technologist for 17 years, and although I do have an associates degree in science, coming to a position such as this, I could always use tips and new ways to help my students now that thay are out in the field.
I always thoght those two points were automatic is why I didnot make point of them.
I like the directional content.
Hi Lucy,
Two words are critical in this process. Application and relevancy. If you can show students how these two words work in their lives they will stay engaged in the learning process.
Gary
I think it is very important to show the relationship between the course and how it will relate to your career. I plan on implementing that as well.
Hi Laura,
With this method you are making the transition from the classroom to the real world much easier to understand. This also helps them with application and relevancy, not to mention the fact they get to taste some very good cheeses.
