Sharita,
By taking this approach you are increasing the value of the course content in the minds of the students. They start to see how the content they are learning can be applied in their careers.

Course content needs to be relevant. Irrelevant material will be perceived by students in many ways that may detract from the impression the instructor is trying to make. It should pertain to the lesson at hand and not the lesson you will teach three weeks from now.
I have along with my Director, have taken any material we know will benefit a student in their career field and apply it along with the required course material.
Maria,
Like the way you spread out your instructional delivery options. This way you will be hitting on the different learning preferences of your students and their engagement in the course will increase greatly.

Knowing your students learning preferences is very important. The way I plan my instruction to accommodate the different learning preferences, may not only give a PowerPoint but I also give a copy of it to everyone with the ability to take notes. I use both visual, auditory and kinesthetic lectures.
Danice,
Sharing real life experiences is essential in helping students to see what the next steps are in their career development as well as giving value to the content they are being taught.

Danice,
Sharing real life experiences is like sealing the deal for students. They get to hear about how they will be using the content that is being taught as well as helping them to see what they can expect upon graduation.

Michael,
Your professional experience and expertise gives you a great opportunity to tell students what they can expect once they are in field while also helping them to see the value of what they are being taught.

LYDIA,
"Reading" students is a good way to get a feel of what their learning preferences are and how they can be engaged in the course. By offering a variety of learning deliveries you will be touching on student learning preferences at different times throughout the course.

I Strongly agree, When implementing real life experiences it gives them a chance to realize that what they are learning is important to their careers and it lets them piggy back off each others opinions as you lead them through the next material.

I include multiple instructional methods, for example lecture, group activities and hands-on lab work.
We all have different learning styles and it can sometimes be a challenge to accomodate the various styles. However, by observing your students before and during class, I can get an idea on what is the best way they can learn.
Some of learn by reading, some by lectures, other by hands-on. In class, I would try to use all these techniques to meet my student's learning needs.
Multiple, diverse explanations of the same thing...Also look into teaching for transfer and lateral learning...
Having so much experience in various aspects of my profession really helps when I have a class of students who all have plans to work in different aspects of the job. I am able to give everybody relevant advice and various technique choices.
Kayla,
Either the first of second class meeting will work. I generally do my assessment the second since the first class meeting I do introductions, and ice breaker and then review the syllabus. By this time my students are starting to feel a bit overwhelmed. So the next class meeting I start off with the learning preference assessment.

I am a new instructor and I was wondering if I am planning on having my students take a learning preference assessment, should I do that their first day? I want the student to be aware of their learning style as well as myself.
Michael,
Good way to get a feel for the class and a profile of that current class.

On the first day of class I go around the room and ask each student's preference in learning style.
