I also talk to and try to learn about each new student I receive in my class. This works, but there are times, when I just have difficulty remembering a new students name. So I create a seating chart (my own personal cheat sheet)for myself. I would never want to make a student feel that they are unimportant to me. Plus it would be useful should I ever need a sub.
I use some powerpoints, as well as short group activities, case studies and interactive lecturing to accommodate the different learning preferences.

I find my students like high tech digital presentations. Since in our particular field they have to take board exams on a computor, my test are digital multiple choice.
We all have this challenge to find ways for the student to understand. I enjoy the students looks on their faces when you find that way.

I've implemented hands on practice.
During the first few class meetings of a particular course I like to get to know the students and their learning style so I can adjust my lecture and presentation style to make sure that all students are comprehending the material clearly. I like to do different things in the classroom such as power points, role playing with students, group work, and discussions. I also tend to ask quite frequently if students understand the material clearly and if there are any questions they may have that I can clear up for them.
I try to make sure I am talking loud enough for everyone to hear and cover everything with lecture combined with PPT pictures and work on the white board as well. I also like to have stuff to pass around the class so they can get a feel for what we are talking about.

Having several examples helps the students realize that they will actually use what they are learning in their career. I also like to get the students involved by asking questions and having them work problems on the board.
