Eugene,
So important in establishing the value of the content you are offering them. They can see that you are basing your standards on what will be expected of them in the work world.

Relating and discussing our practices and standards that are being used in the industry today.

Susan,
I can appreciate the challenge you face. Try pausing in the lecture after 15-20 and do a Q&A session, or a one minute review. These changes in the flow and pace of the class keeps the students engaged in the learning process but lets them "reset" their brains and apply some of their newly acquired knowledge.

Not sure how to incorporate as much hands on as my students need. When teaching anesthesia, there is alot of lecture material they need prior to touching an anesthesia machine. Need to find a way to break up lectures with some activities in between key points.

Dana,
It sure does. What are some ways you do this with your students?

Keeping the course content relevant keeps the student's focus on the subject being taught.

Kisha,
How do you go about selecting the different methods as you switch up your delivery?

I think once you have addressed and observed the learning styles of each student you can then , know how to address there learning my giving them several options to learn a new skill .

u will have to use more than method of teaching.each day perhaps u will switch it up to meet the needs of each student.

First I review the different learning styles and ask the students to assess their learning style. This gives me an idea of their individual learning styles, as well as if there is a predominant learning style of that particular class. I also want the students to be aware of their predominant learning style to plan their study methods.

One could a mixture of methods in their instruction. For example they could use audiovisual materials, websites, or written materials.

That is a good point. Everyone can become more successful if they are able to learn in the most beneficial way for them. It's nice to teach a topic that included a little bit of lecture and classroom, and a little bit of lab each session. This way it is easier to teach in those different styles.

I try to mix lectures (with PowerPoint graphics) up with some group activites and even jeopardy style games. I found the mix keeps students engagaged and brings along those that struggled in understanding in the lecture format. The discussions have been effective as it has students teaching students.

I like to talk to my students ahead of time mainly to find out their intrests.

I plan to vary my teaching style to accomodate all types of learning styles and during my class to use different methods for each lesson to increase students ability to retain information.

I first lecture or give theory by using powerpoint or hand-outs. I then refer to how this knowledge applies to the field of study or how it will impact in occupation to encourage critical thinking and discussion. Then we practice if applicable the skill.

Jeremy,
This approach is what makes the course content relevant and have application. You are bringing current situations to the classroom for student information and reaction. This makes the course engaging for the students.

Being in the field that I teach about I get to use real life patient and Doctor experiances to teach my students. By relating what I experiance on a day to day basis it help show that what we are learning will be needed.

As someone who has spent a great deal of time in my field, I like to show students examples of what we are learning in actual real-world product.

I like to use current events and real life situations during a lesson to show the relevance of the course material.
