I have found that using visual aids, as well as worksheets, quizzes, and demonstrations work well in delivering course content for my classes. The classes seem to respond well to having activities to do.
Students enjoy hands on group projects to enhance the learning process. Having a visual with the reading material enforces the material.
Taunya,
Good strategy. The more variety and application opportunities you provide your students the more they will be engaged in the learning process.

I HAVE BEEN USING NOT ONLY POWERPOINT; BUT I ALSO USE THE WHITE BOARD AND PICTURES TO HELP MY STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE CONTENT.
I implemented more lab activities to my content. This will give the students real life experiences which is more memorable than a report.
Although it has been my experience that most students are tactile learners, I still incorporate all methodology into my classes. I also encourage the students to vary their methodologies depending on content. Some content may be easier to grasp using auditory or visual versus tactile. I think it is important to encourage different study methods within the entire classroom population.
Scott,
I like your approach using the case study and/or problem solving approach. You are showing relevance to your students and they get to then apply their newly acquired knowledge. This is a win win for both the students and your teaching efforts.

I am teaching the computer accounting course. The material is very straight forward, and I beleive the students will attempt to fly through it as fast as they can. I found this my first week, and they were missing material that could help them. I really think they are taking for granted that they are being introduced to jobs that are in demand right now.
I have a few ideas that will get them thinking like managers, not data entry clerks. The first day of class I am going to introduce them to the departments of the fictitional business in the book. Then I am going to show them how the paper trail of a manual accounting system, a facility layout, and how the different departments pass information back and forth. Then afterwards I will say, "now this is my design, how are you going to design your business?" I beleive I can supplement the data entry with creative managment excercises. These students are mostly business majors and this style will interest them.
I try to have a variety of experiences in the classroom, and activities or assignments that also are geared toward the learning types.
Most of the classes that I teach involve or rely heavily on the use of different computer and Internet platforms. By nature this forces a varied teaching style. Typically I'll lecture for a bit on the concepts, do a demonstration for the students, and then give them time to do a few exercises themselves. This approach, I find, hits the different learning styles and keeps most students engaged in one way or another.
Utilize more visuals and get them involved in group projects where they will all have to particiapte.
Apply practical realistic examples
Student's love hands on demonstrations as would be completed in their career. It makes everything very relevant
I have delivered my content in various different ways to keep student attention and interest. They like the variety and become more excited about the course.
I personally like to do lectures and hand-on with my students. I learned they learn more.
I make sure that the course content can be applied in the work world. I give examples of what I have encountered in the work force. When its something that is very relevant to the field of study I make sure I point that particular issue out.
I get the student involved by showing concern for their knowledge
Keeping up to date with our changing technology, I think we need to continue our own education and keep in the field to see what changes are happening.
Also, make changes as necessary to the changes refelect in our classrooms.
I plan according to what I am going to teach. It depends on the class. For example, a clinical class will consists of a lecture and hands on teaching. The student may not understand what I am talking about but once I demonstrate the procedure they understand. This is not for most but for a few. I instruct them on practice makes you better at it. If it is a class that is just lecture I tend to use real world examples so that they can see a picture of what is being discussed.
Marie,
This is a great way to make your course come alive for your students. Since they are vet tech students they see this course differently and you have application to their lives thus value to what is being taught. Great job!
