Even though demonstrations are a key component in the classes at our school I still use other tactics to help prepare the students so they can follow along and not get side tracked. I use handouts with templates, an dry erase easel next to the table with the steps written in order and I will sent them a photo or link the day before so they can see the finished prooduct before they even come to class.

The benefit is that I can reach more students effectively. In one particular class, I use multiple ways to present the material. By the time the students take their certification exam at the end of the class, they have seem the material 4 time in 4 different ways.

Some students do good with books, some do better with hands on so you distunguish which is best.

As a post secondary instructor I have students from varied backgrounds. Some of our students are straight out of High School and some are older adults who have not seen a classroom in twenty years. I may also have students with learning disabilities, ESL and or physical disabilities. Being able to access the learning styles of our students will help us to acheive a better understanding of our course content. Through evaluations and testing I am able to ensure our students are advancing their knowledge and skills.

Hi Betsy - What a dynamic classroom! ( Can I be your student - I could use some cost control!)Best wishes - Susan

Hi Joseph - welcome to ED 103! I am pleased to play a role in your training and happy that you have found our courses useful. Best wishes for great success in your teaching career! Susan

Hi Lawrence - Teaching in an operating restaurant is indeed a challenge. You pose a good question. i suggest having all the recipes on 3 hole punched sheets along with any menus, presentation diagrams or photos. Students should keep binders containing all this info. Best wishes - Susan

I use different formats to teach my subject matter, in order that every student's learning style is maximized - whether it be hands on demos, multimedia presetations, lectures, solo and team work. This way the material is presented in a varied manner which not only maximizes learning styles, but keeps the class dynamic and interesting. One of the classes I teach is Cost Control which can be a bit dry; but it is also a useful tool for my students to take out to the real world and apply to a profitable business. I do this through multimedia presentations, white board class problem solving,"family feud" team exercises, hands on projects throughout our company, and a an individual work related research project.

Thanks,
Betsy

The class I teach is in a operating restuarant enviroment. There is only 2 styles that apply to teaching visual and kinesthetic. What are some other ideas I could use to help teach the other students that are written learners?

I am currently in new instructor training and this course was offered to me by my technical school where I now work. These CEE courses are very helpful in my training. I have no classroom experience yet but soon will.

Without knowing the learning styles of the students, I could be "talking to the walls". Knowing their styles should shape how I present the information.

YOu have to be able to capture all students learning abilities.
If you are able to get the point across you are able to move forward.

Since an instructor's responsiblity is to help the student succeed, knowing the styples will help create effective lesson plans and how to present the information.
