Because our students are so different, I need to know how to reach all of them. They learn in different ways and I need to realize how to get information to them in a plausible way.

It will enable you to be an affective instructor and allow ALL of the students to get a chance at learning.

The benifits is meeting the comprehension level of the studen thus allowing him/her a better chance of understanding the material and so forth. Knowing this before the start of a new class allows the instructor to develop lesson plans that will incorporate delivery through the major learning styles.

Understanding the learning styles of each student enables the instructor to meet the needs of the students at all levels. It promotes a better learning environment and makes the learning more friendly to the individual student. I think it is more exciting as well.

When I teach "soft skills" to students, I frequently remind them of learning styles as an intro to conversational styles. They are surprised at how much people use their learning style just in a simple conversation. And at how altering your conversational style can lead to happier customers!

To know the learning styles of my students will allow me to deliver information in a way that they will recieve it and retain it and understand what they are learning and how to apply it.

Hi, Judy,
I agree that to learn about the student way of processing information is important for a teacher. But this undersanding and knowledge come as a result of the amount of time that the teacher spent with her students. Most of the time in real life we don't have that time. For that reason assessment is very importatnt in the processe of evaluating student ability to comprehand studying materials

Hi George- Thanks for your post to the forum. Being able to adapt your deleivery to the learning styles of your students is wonderful!
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

By knowing how your students prefer to learn helps you as an instructor prepare better on how to deliver content of the class you are teaching. I always plan several different approaches to each new concept I teach and if some students don’t get it. I try other methods before moving on with new material.

Knowing your students is so important. This helps us to decide the best learning style that will work effectively. There are times when an instructor will need to use lecture along with visual material to hold the students attention.

Most of my students prefer a varience of instruction styles.

Hi Michael - Thanks for your post to the forum. I like to use this simple and free assessment -

Some subject matters are more easily adaptive to the conversation/ question style. It is fun to be able to make a short lecture or presentation and then have the students run with it. Using multiple approaches is something that I always try to do. Does anyone have a recommended learning style assessment? I would be interested in exploring the use of one.

The instructional benefits of knowing the learning styles of your students is that you are able to accomodate each student according to their learning syle so that they are able to properly percieve and process the gievn material. This knowledge can be used to be a more effective instructor because it allows the instructor to present the information in the proper way so that every student understands.

Hi Patricia - I really like that idea! It's simple but will really give insight into the student - thanks for sharing. Susan

It helps you reconize the individaul needs of each student, and therefore aids you in developing a lesson plan to better the understanding and material comprehension of each student

Yes,you are correct knowing the learning styles of your students cause each of the student have a different learning methods.

I teach a college success/study skills class. On the first day I ask students to remember a time they learned really well, so well it even surprised them. I have them write their name on a card and describe the circumstance of this surprisingly excellent learning. That is how I get to know them, and it helps me remember who I've got in that class in front of me for the whole term.

It doesn't help me reach every student every time, but it surely doesn't hurt, and it keeps the students aware that they've had success in the past and can have it again.

I think it is important to know the learning styles of the students in your class, even if you can't always teach to that style.

Not all content can be taught in 4 different ways. It would be great if instructors had the time to cover something 4 different ways so that you can reinforce learning and meet those learning style needs.

However, it is still important because you can better support the needs of students by knowing how to integrate as many styles are appropriate for the daily objective.

As an instructor your job is to impart the required information in the most efficient way possible. Targeting to a student's learning style will accomplish this goal.
