Hi Herbert- Thanks for your post to the forum. Although tailoring your delivery to address the learning styles may at first seem to take more time/effort, as you mention, it makes us better instructors! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Thanks Susan! =)

Knowing the learning styles of your students will involve all the students. Chances are your going to have all four learning styles.

You will need to include all four styles keep all students interested

By knowing and providing information to the students that appeal to their primary learning style I can ensure that each student gets the most out of the learning experience. By appealing to the auditory, written, visual and kinesthetic style learners, and tailoring, my lessen to appeal to all of them, I become a better instructor.

Hi Jennifer- Thanks for your post to the forum. You are doing a terrific job of addressing all the learning styles of your students! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

HI Mark - You are doing exactly what you need to do to address all the learning styles of your students- Great work!! Best wishes- Susan

Susan,

In order to be an effective instructor, it is imperative to understand the different learning styles of your students. I would say that it was one of the biggest challenges facing instructors. To reach all of the different learning styles present in my classroom at any given time is challenging, and the best thing that I can do is to vary the methods, I use to deliver the material, and vary the kind of assignments that the students need to complete to be successful. Without the knowledge of learning styles, many students would be left out, struggling to get anything out of the class, beyond a lower than expected grade.

You need to focus on what the students respond to.Each style is usefull if you deliver it correctly

knowing the learning styles of your students help you to tailor your lesson accordingly assuring all students benefit and receive the intended information.

Well certainly knowing your student's learning style is essential in getting your information accross effectively. More importantly, I think it is a good way to ensure that students get the most out of the class and also live up to their highest potential. I teach pastry arts. My subject is very hands on but there are theoretical portions of the curriculum that can be very hard for students if they are not presented in several different formats. I really try to vary my "lecture" approach every day to keep all of my students "in the loop"

As a culinary instructor I really try to address most of the learning styles during every class. This is a push that our department has been working on for about a year. First, we use powerpoint presentations to introduce the products and techniques at the beginning of the presentation, then discuss what we are doing while demonstrating the technique of the day. Finally, students get up and do the cooking technique. The results have been great, the students seems to "get it" much more quickly now that we focus on varied ways to get the information out there.

I try to incorporate MANY different styles into my classroom. However, some of the lectures do require auditory senses. I do use humour and lots of "funness" in the lecture!

Have you tried peer evaluations as part of the grade?

Hi Al- Thanks for your post to the forum. I have found that having part of the grading rubric be a peer evaluation by their teammates can encourage participation. Best wishes for continued success in your gteaching career. Susan

Knowing the learning styles of my students because it allows me to be an effective instructor. I can cover more information and the students are more in engaged.

As an instructor you need to know the proper way to get the information to your students. When I have to have a project to be completed and I know that a student learns by seeing the information, I will ask this student to do a project by using this form. The group works great also, but some times the one student will not do what he should and the other students will submit the group project, and will state that the student didn't help. I find that peer pressure works to bring the student around.

I think the biggest benefit of knowing learning styles is knowing how to engage students. I believe that no matter what learning styles students have, they need to be engaged. I think students retain information and apply information much better.

Hi Marion- Thanks for your post to the forum. Realistically you most likely will not address all the learning styles in every lesson. The best course is to try to use each style as often as possible. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
