By knowing the learning styles of my students, I can ensure that I am using every method possible to get through to my students so that they leave class knowing the content. If you only use one method of delivery, you are not teaching every student.
Hi Dera- Thanks for your post to the forum. Younpresented some good examples of ways to teach to the learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.- Susan
By kowing your students learning styles you are not only helping them to learn but you are also giving them a leg up when it comes to their ability to learn. They learn easier and are more comfortable when they are learning within their learning style.
It is important to know the learning styles of your students so that you can present the information in a manner that will capture each student's attention. For example, after students have read the assigned material, a PowerPoint presentation followed by a mock client interview can really solidify the concepts.
By knowing the preferred learning styles of students, an instructor can better prepare lessons to include student learning preferences. Students will learn more effectively, retain information longer and be more successful.
I try variety of delivery methods the first week of class to get an idea what works best for my recurring 6 week class.
when you know and understand the learning styles of your students you can adjust your nstructional skills to best suit the needs of the students
knowing a student learning style gives me an idea of how to effectively deliver course content
that best reach them.
Students learn differently. If I can assess their learning styles, I can teach classes that either meet the needs of most of the students or I can change my style during the class period to accomodate all of the styles.
By knowing the learning styles of each student, i can know how to address them or how to help them retain information.
Knowing the learning style helps you incorporate what is needed to get the student to understand the subject.
I think that knowing the learning style of my students is one of the most important parts of teaching. For one, it keeps us, the instructors on our toes and if we are good teachers, we adjust to meet the needs of the students. It also makes the class much more pleasurable for the students.
Hi Claire - Thanks for your post to the forum. you are definitely varying your delivery to reach the learning styles of your students. I also liked your idea of having your students complete practice tests rather than just listening to you do a verbal/lecture review for tests. Thanks for sharing! Susan
I know students will learn more and do better at remembering what they've learned when I use a wide variety of teaching methods. In every class, I try to use activities, reading and writing, and hands-on. I seem to have quite a few students who don't learn by reading or by listening.
It makes the student more likely to engage in classroom discussions
It is important to know the students you are teaching, to address as many students as possible at one time is important , however to give each student their individual attention is essential to know how each student learns.
HI Marcia- Thanks for your post to the forum. I'm glad that you found this class useful. It is interesting how some classes can have a dominanant style while others are more diverse. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Knowing the learning styles of my students help me understand them and whatthey need to knwo and how they need to know it.
In other words there are more than one way of doing things. It not just black and white.
I have read about and often enjoyed looking at learning styles. I often use a minimal syllabus so I can "plug in" activities for particular class members or the class as a whole, based on the preferences I see once the class starts. I do see that on a few tasks, students may go to a secondary style. Although not actively kinesthetic, I much prefer to learn software hands-on with some sort of person to reference if things do not seem to be going as planned.
It can be important to re-familiarize oneself with the various learning styles from time to time. In retrospect, I think I recently had a class dominated by auditory learners, and I don't think I fully picked up on that until reviewing this material. I did not expect this, for some reason, in the class I was teaching.
Hi Richard- You obviously see a lot of kinesthetic students and I agree it can be a challenge to get the theory/concepts material across. We just nee to try to vary our delivery as much as possible. Best wishes- Susan
