Skill Application Testing
Do you use Skill Application Testing during your course? For either a yes or no answer, please explain why.
we use skill application on most of our tests to see if they remember the hands on material
Yes The student may pass the written tests, but the real test is can thay apply what they learned and that can only be done by a skill application test.
HI Clare - Thanks for your post to the forum. You are wise to make sure that your students get to do some hands-on at the computers right after you have lectured. Best wishes - Susan
Steve, The students use skill application testing every day as they work out instructional lectures and text research/testing and then go onto their computers to demonstrate the ideas discussed. It really allows them to see that they understand the material covered. Reading and then drawing.
Steve, Since I teach at a technical school in a CAD/Drafting environment I use "Skill Application Testing" as part of my testing as the student not only needs to understand how the computer program works that they are using but also how to use the program to create specific drawings wither in Architectual, Mechnical, or Civil application that deminstrates in a "real world" situation. This has been quite successful as they apply for employment and show a great portfolio.
Skill application testing is one of the most important things my student do in their course work. They have to make the food that I have demonstrated and lectured about in the week prior to their practical exam.
Yes i do. When I do engine test outs, we are looking at specific skill sets. ther are several areas we look at; hands on, technical publication use, troubleshooting diagnosis materials use and diagnostic equipment and special tool usage. they must all reach a certain level of expertise in each area to pass.
Yes, and the end of each section being taught there is a hands on portion of an exam. This evaluates the student’s skill level in many aspects.
Hi Charlie - I agree, skill application assessment must be part of programs in career schools. Thanks for your posting! Best wishes - Susan
Yes, I do use skill application test in lab. as skills that will be necessary in the work force, it is very important that students understand the concept why, the procedure how, and the results what. By testing out in lab the skills are demonstrated and can be evaluated. I think this is a very important test as a career training institution.
Many of times the written exams in class are useful for verifying that the student has retained the information. In lab it is a test of being able to actually apply what they have learned on a piece of equipment. Knowing the informations is only half the battle. Knowing how to use it is just as important.
At the conclusion of the 15 days of instruction and study the student will be given a written test and a skill test at the end of the course to determine if the student has mastered the information and can put it into use. The skill test is timed and must be completed in a set manner.
Yes we test in Lab every course. Thew skill of each student is established as a final Lab test.
Yes,
This takes place every day that they go to Lab, and there is an End Of Course Lab Test at the end of the 3 week course.
We give a written test and a skill test at the end of the course to determine if a student has learned the information and can put it into use in diagnosis and working with tools. The skill test is timed and must be completed in a set manner. The grade is a pass or Fail at 70%.
We have them pull the study guide out for that lecture and fill them out while we a lectureing to make sure they are getting the information needed to suceed. The other reason is to see what they retained from the lecture by the questions.
Yes, all of our courses require a practical exam in lab in order to pass the course. In some of the electrical courses this is a timed exam and students must satisfactorily perform a variety of operations within the allowed time frame.
my answer is yes I do.the student needs to tear down an engine, measure it,and reassemble it in a one week time frame.I grade on tool usage, teamwork, following directions, how information is applied and remembered. They also must perform hands-on cam degreeing on a table top engine in lab .
There would be no way to properly evaluate if the student is ready for the field or have any idea of how well he was going to do once there without a comprehensive test of skills.
