I take into consideration the type of information that was delivered. Some sections require identification of anatomical structures, so matching works nicely. While others require recall, where multiple choice and true/false can be used. Time limits are also a big consideration. I teach an accelerated program, so every moment counts!

Hi Lisa - Thanks for your post to the forum. Your take on how to choose assessments is right on! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

i teach all skill based items so this is what i will always opt for

The most important criteria is what are we testing for. Am I testing for informatin recall or skills aquisition, or knowledge application.

I access the knowledge base and learning styles of my students and diferentiate as needed.

I enjoy being more ingauged in my class

As a nursing instructor it is important for the student not only to comprehend the material but to be able to apply it. Testing varies according to the couse material.

I go from the test bank and create tests.

I have not started on my own. But the format that I like the best when I was a student was matching and multiple choice

make sure material covered in lecture is tested

I think it is really important to select a style that is going to be most reliable and has high validity.

depends on the content I'm teaching... if I want them to memorize information, then the multiple choice and matching tend to work well. I try to change the format to add interest as well.

I like to use a variety, it seems to work best if I mix them up a bit. Each student learns different so I believe in giving everone a fair chance at testing, so incorporating each of the formats helps me to evaluate each student.

Hi Karen That's exactly the choices I make when I teach Ethics. Best wishes - Susan

I believe it is essential to touch on all the deferent learning styles, students are so diverse. I know how I learn best, but that does not mean the next person learns the same way. I try to include all learning styles in my lectures.

It depends on what you are testing to find out. With my class, I use essay and short answer questions because it is a phylisophical class and I need to know if they understand the concepts. If I were testing for facts or terms, I may use multiple choice or matching.

I use multiple choice to test understanding of technical areas; maath, accounting, physics, chemistry, etc.
I use short answer and essay questions to guage whether or not the student has obtained a sufficient understanding of how to connect the material of the course in a cognitive manner vs. reciting just facts and figures.
I use completion tests to determine how well the student understands the material enough to furnish the short answers used in completion tests.

HI Madeliene- ( what a beautiful name you have!) Thanks for your post to the forum. You are doing an excellent job with your assessments, choosing appropriate types for specific purposes. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

In my curriculum, I have to use a number of different testing formats. Skills evaluations are used throughout in the lab portion along qith short answer and essay regarding the application of the skill.

Multiple choice is my usual format for academic testing because I can evaluate their critical thinking skills with expectations that they select the "best choice".

Thanks Karen - I love what I do!
