I agree with Mary about the combination of lecture and demonstration. For example,In a refrigeration system, you have to convey to the students, how the it worh and also why it work. Then take that piece of equipment apart and explain its function and the purpose of it.

Eugene,
You make a number of good points about the need for students to integrate their new knowledge into their cognitive memories. The more their new knowledge and skills becomes a part of their positive habits the more application of the content will be made leading to more success.

I plan exercises and activities that I know applies to their future courses and career field. I believe they can see the value of these activities. I also give activities that the student can use to reflect how they fit in their career field.

I have found that by taking the things in the coures and apply them to my teaching of students have helped me understand sutdents problems better

Application of new knowledge often takes a little longer than anticipated. It is dependent upon the business usage the student uses the information for. And of course, it is dependent upon the student's ability to cope with the events where the use of the information is appropriate. The application is also dependent upon the amount of replications the student uses it for. An example is the APA writing style. If the student is required to write in that format, then it is likely that he or she will retain the correct information usage over time. If used infrequently, recall becomes less, and when it is time to reuse the format, the student must go back to the basics of the method to make certain that the writing is correct.

I have them provide examples of their attainment of the new knowledge by performing tasks related to the lecture at the end of the lecture. I teach computer applications and after lecturing we do a practical exercise after each chapter with increasing difficulty after each chapter.

The cognitive skills are so important to developing the tactile skills. It is so much easier to remember how to do something when you understand the why. Then provide as realistic lab assignments to develop and apply those skills. Explain why they are learning this skill, using personal experiences especially if they were short comings from not knowing that skill, and how that effected how you performed your job.

Allen,
This is an instructional approach that helps to keep the students engaged and focused on the content. Variety is a way to keep students on target and you are doing such with the different discussion and feedback points throughout your classes.

With many of my computer classes there is no time for lecture assigned in the syllabus. I do however get the class to contribute by allowing them to work in teams to solve a problem with a project, then a rowdy discussion on the techniques and means by which they solved the problem. This restates the purpose of the problem and the objectives are clearly discussed when the class focuses on the issues. My students like the diversity that the class allows, a little time with the computer, teamwork to solve a problem, then a discussion to emphasize the solution(s).

My students tend to be interested in performing tasks that mimic the job that they are training for. They like to perform tasks just like they will do in the real workplace. Hearing about probable experiences in a hospital setting also seems to encourage the learning process-they want to be capable of performing the necessary tasks that they will most probably encounter. Even if it takes numerous repetitions to master the techniques, they want to be ready to handle the task when it is encountered in the real world.

Thru personal attention I can help students find meaning and value in the material.I like to give "real life" applications where certain mistakes have been made and then how to avoid them. As an Instructor of a Trade School we have the added advantage of "hands on" training. As students hear about it, read about it, and then do it with their hands, they tend to remember much better. In addition, they can apply their new learning several times while they perfect it.
What works for you?

Samuel,
This approach helps to get the students invested in the learning process and takes them from being passive learners to active learners. The more opportunities like this we can provide the more engaged they will be.

Nestor,
Welcome to teaching. Thank you for being willing to share your knowledge and expertise in HVAC with the next generation of students. You have a good attitude about working with your students and this goes a long way in teaching. Use your life experiences to impart the value of effort and expertise to your students.

The real world is definitely where it will matter, and part of that is flexibility when things don't go as planned. One exercise I use is to have the students begin a project, then halfway through, have them trade with someone else and finish a project someone else started.

I like this approach. Sometimes they tend to learn better if given the responsibility of teaching someone else. I also have my students research a new topic we cover in class, bring it back to class, and teach me something I didn't know.

I like to practice both...build on acquired knowledge, and apply new knowledge. I start each class day or topic change with a review of what was covered previously and direct that into the next idea. I also end each new lesson with hands-on application, allowing them to "see" what we just read. I'll also wait a few days and have them repeat the hands-on to see how much they've forgotten.

I would help students to retain new information by making them understand by different teaching skills.I would make them play games and other activities to apply new information.

By reinforce the learning with practical applications, "doing" what has been learned rather than just hearing about it, build on what was learned in last session to tie in with new learning.

by teaching the older students how important it is to recognize that what they are doing will reflex thier future.

I have been doing some of the course offered by cee.I am doing it at home because I work only part-time.
This is my first time teaching, but I have plenty of experience in the trade.
Starting in the U.S Navy, after retiring from the service, have decided to continue to work in the trade.
I have retired from doing service work and decided impart my knowledge of air conditioning and refrigeration to the younger genaration.
So here I am at tws/emt in jacksonville, florida.
