Amy,
I use them a lot in my classes for the reasons you state. They really get the students cranked up about what we are studying because they help to make the course content real.

I think have guest speakers in the field is great motivation. Also, employers/companies that come and talk to students and explain they are looking for future employees motivate also.

Terry Marie,
This is a wonderful way to graphically show students how they are progressing toward their career goals. The pictures capture them and their efforts which in turn reinforces their motivation for success.

Mohammad,
The more we can bring "real world" examples and situations into our classes the better prepared our students are going to be. You are doing such with Excel and the applications that can be made with it.

I teach accounting, finance and statistics. I try to utilize excel as a tool to solve majority of the problems, that motivates students to learn more. It is easily available in any computer. This has also useful in real world and which also excites and motivates student to learn more.

One way I get my class motivated is i asked them at the begining of our first session "what are you here for? " I get a lot of responses, from my children to " I am the frist to go to college", and so on. So with that, I ask them to keep a binder and put their motivation in pictures. That way, each class they have, it will be with them and they can keep dtriving towards their goal.

Donald,
Yes, it is. The need to see the end result of what their efforts will get them. This helps to make their going to school more real.

For me it is focusing them on the end result, the career opportunities.

Donnalyn,
So do students. Notice how they perk up when you tell a story about something that relates to the topic and happened to you or one of your colleagues. These stories help to make the course content real.

Thomas,
I agree. A shared laugh and a story from the field help to keep students engaged and ready to learn more.

I love using life experiences, by telling funny stories and situtation that I or the students have experienced in the career fields

Creating assignments for opportunities growth in each student field. Building trust and respect among them.Building group and team identity and ensure that they help each other to meet their objectives.

I often tell work related stories that are humorous but also prove a point. I find that laughter in the classroom leads to students that want to stay in the classroom and/or look forward to coming back.

Rachelle,
Students love these stories. They help to make the content real for the students plus they encourage them to work harder so they can get out into the field from which they are hearing these stories.

An example of effective motivation techniquest that career college instructors can use in their classes is the excitment and intresting stories that happened to that instructor while they were working in the field. Then tieing back those examples to content related to the material they are covering or have covered.

Judy,
Engagement is essential in the learning process and you are doing such with your method. This keeps everyone focused on the content and how they are moving closer to their career goals.

Rebecca,
Students love to hear stories from their instructors about their field. These stories help to motivate and inspire them to wanting more success in their classes.

During my lecture, i engage my students for understanding and retention. One of the ways i motivate them is with positive reinforcement. Making them feel part of the class discusssion is important as well as giving them positive feedback.

Sharing stories and experiences and allowing the students to do the same.Being able to restate something with more clarity if a student doesn't understand a topic in the way it was originally presented.

Christopher,
This is a great way to get them focused on their future. By having them put themselves into the success picture that you are outlining for them they will be motivated to stay in school.
