alot of great motivatin tips ! enjoyed this modual .ed102

One of the more effective motivation techniques is providing immediate student feedback. Giving the student “baby steps” in reaching a course objective allows them to attain confidence, and an understanding of the practical application of gained knowledge .

Jamie,
Your course sounds like a great one for the students. I like the way you are showing them that they can and should be change agents as they grow in their careers. Keep up the good work.

Judy,
I have experienced the same students that you refer to in your comments. I work as hard as I can with each student but when a student decides that he/she will do only the minimum to get by and get money I have a tough time with it. I hate to see potential go to waste but I cannot be successful for them. So their choice to get by is one that will result in their lives being lived by just getting by. Sad but a part of challenges presented to us as educators.

Sheer encouragement on my part and knowing the students' goals

I teach a change management class and throughout I refer to the students as change agents. They become what they are being groomed to be. I can see the development as they become more comfortable with that role.

There are several different ways to help motivate a student -- many depend directly on the students personality.

Some students, as the course explained, are highly motivated by grades. These students are generally good students that constantly strive for an A or 4.0 GPA.

Some students are motivated, especially in career colleges, by life. Frequently, these are the students that are looking to change fields, or begin a serious career path.

Unfortunately, some students are motivated by less positive factors. I have seen a handful of these students, and they can be very difficult to deal with. One example is the student that is motivated just enough to get by, often barely passing classes in order to secure government assistance or loan funds.

Shivani,
Four great words to remember as we enter the classroom each time.

Melissa,
A simple act of reinforcement is a powerful indicator of career growth. Your students are developing their skills at putting up a good dish and you are letting them know you know it. Powerful way to increase their motivation. Keep up the good work.

I teach in the restaurant of a culinary school so my students are really working a shift. While it can get stressful and fast paced, every time someone puts up a great dish I comment on it, and when it's exceptional I high five. Now the students look for the hand to come up, then the high fives move down the line. It's pretty cool!

LaToya,
This is such an important part of learning for students. They see in you a person to admire as well as model after. This helps them to put their life challenges into perspective and increases their dedication to success. Keep up the good work.

I've found providing a practical story or problem prior to a lesson grabs the students' attentions & launches us into a topic.

One motivation technique I use in class is my success story in my career field. I share my progress of going to college and overcoming many obstacles to get to were I am at today. Students will then view me as an role model and are motivated to learn and become sucessful.

There are too many motivational techniques to mention. Every interaciton with a student is an opportunity to advance their commitment to their education.

Chanda,
They really are. They help to bring relevancy and application to the content that is being offered.

speakers from the industry are always great motivators to students.

Sharing your personal experiences tends to offer motivation to my students.

Andre,
I like to use this approach as well. Sharing like this helps the students become invested in the learning process as well as expanding their communication skills.

One of the most effective motivational techniques that I have found is to form groups and let the students present the course material to the class using their own experience as examples. This provides the students with the experience of working with the course material on several different levels of cognition.
