Hi Brian,
I have encountered these type of students. It is simple, take responsibility for your own actions. You have some students
that love to do the finger pointing instead of evaluating themselves.
Patricia Scales
You right many times the instructors at my facility are only with the students for 3 weeks but we can pick up on problems with students. But many times the students do not want to talk to use about them. Then we have the ones that play the system. This includes missing time in the class room and trying to make up time. They always have a problems with something in there life which is causing the bad grades. Sometime we need to take the ownership spirit and stop blaming everything else except for our own
actions
Hi Cheryl,
I concur! Following through with students is vitally important to keeping them in school. Students need to know that we care about them.

The Instructor, financial advisor, all staff ,and the student are the key players in keeping the student enrolled. We need to work with the student and help advise them to keep them interested and attending school. Establishing goals and following through with the student.
Hi Shawn,
Students need to know that we genuinely care about them and their success.

Hi Don,
Listening is key! Anytime a red flag comes up, jump on the student immediately to find out what is going on because most students are extremely private, and they will fall off the face of the earth on you.
Patricia Scales
Hi Holly,
I concur! The brunt of retention truly rests on the instructors.
Patricia Scales
I believe the key players are the insructors - while all members of an educational facility want to see students stay enrolled, the instructors are in contact with the students all day. We call, e-mail and do whatever necessary to keep these students in classes. The students are also more apt to trust someone with whom they have daily interaction(rather than, say, financial aid or other departments), and we are the ones who need to keep them engaged and in a comfortable, safe learning environment.
I believe that it is a full team effort involving the Instructor, student services department, financial aid department, employment department and admissions representatives. The instructor should be the one responsible to recognise when a student may be having issues and communicate that to the correct department after talking to the student. An experienced instructor can usually determine when a student is having problems based on the students attitude, focus and willingness to learn. Communication between the instructor and his/her students is crucial.Be a good listener.
The first key person is the instructor. He/She is on the front lines with the students. The instructor needs to develop an atmoshpere of learning for the students, show them some caring, and that as an instuctor we will listen to determine any specific needs they require. But of course everyone else that the student is aquainted with on a daily basis, on campus, needs to do their part to do what needs to be done for the Student.
Hi Mark,
When students feel a sense of importance and a part of what is going on, they strive to have better attendance because they feel they are needed.
Patricia Scales
Hi Amy,
I concur! It certainly takes a village to work retention. Everyone has to be fully involved.
Patricia Scales
I believe that it's a group effort. To see a student actually complete a full program takes a village and cannot be done along. Adminstration and Faculty play an equally significant role.
By taking an agressive approach to student retention we can make the students feel like they are an important part of my class,as well as the school. I try to tell them that we "missed ", having them in class, and needed them for a particular group exercise.
Hi Amber,
I concur! Every employee matters when it comes to working retention. It takes an entire village to fight the battle of retention.
Patricia Scales
Everyone is a key player in keeping students enrolled. Providing a comfortable, safe, and productive learning environment is the job of every individual within a specific program. Students who feel nervous, uncomforable, or are not seeing progress in their learning are not going to do well in the courses and therefore are more likely to drop out of the program.
Hi Justine,
I agree! It is a team effort to promote the institution.
Patricia Scales
Hi Nicole,
I have seen it that generally if students have great work ethic while in school, they will have great work ethic on the job, and I have seen just the opposite as well.
Patricia Scales
Everyone should play a roll but as an institution all employees should play a roll in keeping students enrolled. Employees should be promoting the institution everyday.
I find it important to teach them why it is important to be in class. Just because people
are adults doesn't mean they were thaught that at
a young age. The students have to understand that what they do in school is most likely how
they will be when they get out.
