Hi William,
Some students do have a change of interest. I deal with these on a case-by-case basis. There are some students that really need your instituion, and then there are other students who can make it at any 4-year university. You have to know your students.

I also feel that the instructor plays a role in retention. this role changes from school to school. I teach at a school where we are only with a particular group of students for three weeks at a time. it is very difficult to get to know the students in this short time frame. I attend school at an online school and the instructor never gets to have personal contact with me as a student. Instructors do need to keep their eyes open and pay attention to the students. They can add guidance and direction to the student. I feel that the staff of the school as a whole has responsibility to help keep the student in school. Looking at it from a different perspective i think the institution should also have the students best interest at heart. I mean that if a student has discovered that their interests have changed that they should be encouraged to changed directions and pursue that new direction as well.
Hi Dave,
I love your perspective! I can tell teaching is your passion! It certainly takes the work of everyone to effectively work retention. Continue to make a positive impact on students' lives.

Great question! At our organization every department is responsible for our student's success. No one detail is too small. We are changing the world one life at a time. As the instructor I teach class and lab competencies in small steps. I have the students do quizzes and labs that are designed to give them confidence in the subject matter. With confidence, comes commitment.

Hi Bryan,
Instructors can catch the student before anyone else does because of the more frequent contact the instructor has with the student. Instructors see the students more often than anyone else does.

Instructors possess the first line to the students to try to address retention issues while they are still managable.
Hi Bryan,
We are the most essential when it comes to retention, however everyone plays a role. It takes the work of everyone to effectively manage retention.
Patricia Scales
The instructor is the most key.
Hi Taylor,
Everyone is involved when it comes to retention, however instructors really do seem to be more involved, simply because the instructors deal with the students on an everyday basis.
Patricia Scales
Hi Leonardo,
I concur! Retention is the job of everyone, but the instructor is likely to work retention more than other personnel.

Hi Michael,
We as instructors really do see our students more so than the other departments. We have to be very observant and pay attention to our students so that we can read signs when they are becoming unmotivated. The minute a student's attitude changes for the worse, immediately confront the student to determine what is going on.

I work at a school that has several departments that have interaction with the students throughout their enrollment period, but by far the instructor has the most interaction and influence on the students. The amount of time spent face to face results in a relationship that no other person in the building can build. The instructor will be the first to know when the student is having second thoughts about staying in school an can advise the students on the big picture and the importanse of finishing.
Everyone that the student interacts with on a daily basis is responsible for the retention of that student. We all play a part in providing some type of service to students. We need to make sure we pay close attention to our students and show them the value in what they are doing and why they are here. In my opinion the instructor and student relationship will be the strongest throughout their schooling and so the most influence on retention lies with the instructor.
I believe the key players are the instructors and also the education team. As an instructor, we play a key role in helping the students through the course. Since we see the students every day, we are the frontline to help encourage them to stick through their education. I also believe that the education management and advisors help give them encouraging words and advise on their educational goals and any problems that they may encounter during their time in school.
Hi Traci,
Good idea! Get everyone involved in retention from the custodian to the director. It is everyone's role.
Patricia Scales
Hi Peter,
I concur! Everyone plays a role in retention. I have known students to get upset and quit due to financial aid or upset with placement. Students can find every excuse in the book to quit. Retention is the responsibility of all.
Patricia Scales
I'll say the Instructor is a great part of retention, but not the sole influence. While the Instructor might only interact with the student for three weeks at a time at our school, the rest of the campus departments have a huge responsibility when it comes to retention. From Financial Aid, to Student Services, to Employment services, everybody has a stake in the students ability to stay in school and prosper.
The instructor is key in retention as they are most involved the majority of the time. Our institution is working towards encouraging all faculty and staff (i.e. book store staff)to play an active role.
Hi Ronald,
You must work retention daily in order to retain as many students as possible. The key is to detect problems early.
Patricia Scales
We are very retention orientated at our school.
We follow up on a daily basis your students attendance, making contact with the students to see
why they were not in class. Offering assistance if possible through student services department to try to catch a situation before it develops into a major problem. The students respond very positively to this feeling that their needs are a top priority. No matter what services we offer in the classroom we have to have the student there it be effective.
