syllabus useage
the ability to lay out the cuorse policies objectives goals topics gives the student the direction that the class will take and what is expected of them.
Hi Melissa,
You are on point! The syllabus is subject to change. I never share my daily outline/lesson plan with my students before hand because students will hold your feet to the fire if you happen to get behind.
Patricia
It is important to clarify the syllabus so that the students know what is expected of them. They should know what is required in the class and what is optional. It is also important that the students understand that the syllabud is not set in stone, that things may change along the way. I know that each class moves at a different pace. Some are able to move quickly, others require a little bit more time in certain subjects. I like to explain that the syllabus can be changed to suit the class needs, but the requirements, assignments and objectives are the same.
Hi Diane,
Going over the syllabus is just the right thing to do on the very first day. Students expect a syllabus the first day of any course.
Patricia
I think this is very important. I go over the syllabus thoroughly the first day of every quarter with the students so they understand what we will be doing and how it relates to their chosen profession.
Hi Brandi,
What a catching phrase, "A recipe for success!" The idea of a FAQ page is fabulous! I can see how a student would appreciate such document.
Patricia
"A recipe for success!" I like that. Although I am not in the culinary field, I often like to employ metaphors that relate to the chosen topic of the day. I also believe the syllabus if very important and I believe it should contain all the important information for the class. I do not necessarily change my syllabus, but it does adapt each term. I usually refer to it as the weeks go along just to make sure the students know we are on track! They seem to enjoy that element atleast! But I like the idea of a FAQ page for things left out. Interesting additive!
Hello Emily,
What a great idea! Do you pratice this tactic, and if so how effective has it been?
Patricia
Reviewing the course syllabus every 2 or 3 weeks is a great way to re-instill the course objectives and keep the students engaged in the course itself rather than just what they want to get out of it.
Hi John,
Students look forward to receiving the syllabus on the very first day. The PowerPoint presentation adds a nice touch to the first day as well.
Patricia
I find that most students come into my class looking for a syllabus,I give this out the first day of class and go over it within the first half hour, we also have a power point presentation that covers all rules and regulations regarding this course.
Hi Judy,
The syllabus is definitely the recipe for the course. It has everything included. I like the idea of including frequently asked questions in the syllabus.
Patricia
When I give them the syllabus, I tell my culinary students that this is a receipe for success. I use my syllabus like you do and I often change it to include new information that I may not have given and to include content for frequently asked questions.
Hi Ted,
Wow, having to change the syllabus midstream of the course due to a curriculum change can be challenging. At my institution, we always wait until a new grading period begins to implement curriculum changes. It works well implementing changes at the beginning intead of midway.
Patricia
What happens when a change in curriculum mandates a change in the Syllabus mid stream of the course. How do the students react? I too use a fairly rigid syllabus but constant course material change has made it less effective and some times tough to deal with.
Hi David,
The syllabus is such an important tool for courses. As mentioned the syllabus has many uses. You even have some of the rules mentioned in the syllabus.
Patricia
Additionally the syllabus can provide the instructor an overview as to using various learning material such as pass around samples, use of the text book and other learning activities.
I enjoy the sylabus for my class. It allows me to clearly state in writing something they can refer to each day if needed to know what their expectations are and a time frame of when things will be done in. It makes for an orderly progression through the class with little interruption or ambiguity to assignments grading procedures and tests.
Hello John,
It is so motivating whenever a student exceeds his or her goal. They truly now believe that the sky is the limit.
Patricia
Hi Victoria,
I really like the idea of the sign sheet. What a way to make the students accountable.
