It seems to really help to be as "real" as possible and give personal experience stories for students to relate the "academic" to the "practical"

Hi Peggy,
Presentation weighs a lot. Students need to feel as though the presentation is effective enough so that learning is taking place, and it sparks interest.

Hi Jamie,
When students have a sense of involvement, it automatically generates interest, thus hopeing that the students will buy into the course.

Patricia Scales

I agree that is a huge part, but I also feel the way a class is presented has an impact as well. If the class is done poorly, students will lose interest and not preform to their best ability.

Presentation of pre-lecture and direct involvement in the demonstration process asap.

Hi Mariann,
You are on point! Students need to know how the value of the material is going to benefit them in their career to generate buy in.

Patricia Scales

Hi Peggy,
Students really need to know how the course is going to benefit them in their career. This generates buy in.

Patricia Scales

I feel you must show a real interest in your topic as well as knowledge. You must show that you too are a constant learner. The value of the material must be demonstrated for the students to buy in. The students will know if you are not invested yourself.

One way would to find out why they are taking the course, then telling them how they will accomplish that.

Hi Edie,
When learning applies to what students will be doing in the real world, you get students to buy into the course.

For Medical Lab Technician, have them role play patients, visitors and employees involved in patient care given at a hospital.

Privacy is so important in healthcare and unknowingly at times it is violated, I would want to give out a situation to several small groups that would/could violate HIPAA.

It is a great way to see everyone's viewpoint.

I find that we need to give the students a reason to come back tomorrow. They definetly need to see the value in the education their getting.

To help get course buy in from your students I feel that you first have to make the connection with the student to demonstrate that you care about them as an individual and about their future ahead, outside of the classrooms. The lessons that will be learned will extend beyond the classrooms and will be with them for life. As soon as the student realizes your sincere interest, they will soon be a believer in you and the program.

Hi Douglas,
Great idea. A visual adds better clarity. I am sure the students better understand the relevancy of the course due to the drawing.

Hi Kenisha,
Enthusiasm really begins with the instructor. Students can tell when an instructor has a passion for what they do.

Patricia Scales

Immediately I set the tone for the course I am instructing. I explain to them that the course is the foundation for further courses which may apply to their field of study. I draw a picture of the foundation of a home, and explain to them that each part of constructing a home is similiar to completing each part of this course. This may give them a goal and hopefully a larger interest in the course that I am instructing.

Students get excited sometimes by seeing that the instructor is excited and passionte about what they are teaching. Also, it is very beneficial when you invite guest speakers that are happy and successful in the industry to speak to the students.

Hi Diane,
Students love it when the instructor shows enthusiasm for the course. Excitement starts with the instructor and can certainly trickle down to the students.

Patricia Scales

A strong outline of what is expected, a solid syllabus and enthusiasm.

It's important, as the instructor, to be full of energy and excitement for the class, and then they will feel there is something exciting to the course content. Also, try to find resources, articles, topics that appeal to the genre that students are learning and help highlight interest in their career field. Students want to be excited and interested, but it's up to the instructor to find topics that connect to the class. You will find that different topics connect to different students, so vary the assignments and class activities.
